Medical - Medical (general) / hypophyse
French term or phrase: insuffisance anté ou post hypophysaire
This is from a list of disorders that are treated at a certain hospital.
The full phrase is:
Autres pathologies hypophysaires (hypophysite, insuffisance anté ou post hypophysaire...)

From what I understand, ***insuffisance anté ou post hypophysaire*** both refers to disorders in which the pituitary gland fails to produce enough hormones. Can the entire expression be translated as simply "hypopituitarism"??

Suggestions and insight welcome.

Hypopituitarism is defined as partial or complete deficiency in one or more of the hormones produced by the anterior pituitary gland (ACTH, TSH, FSH, LH, GH, prolactin) or posterior pituitary (ADH, oxytocin).

This confirmed my hunch. I opted for "hypopituitarism" on the basis that it covers anterior and posterior, no need to look any further. This is sufficient for my context.

agree  Anne Schulz: with anterior & posterior hypopituitarism [Hi DrManu, it certainly does in a way, but why then does the source explicitly specify "anté ou post", rather than just speaking of "insuffisance hypophysaire"?]

neutral  Drmanu49: Not the usual terminology. And for Anne, hypopituitarism covers both the anterior pituitary gland (ACTH, TSH, FSH, LH, GH, prolactin) or posterior pituitary (ADH, oxytocin).

agree  Sue Davis: I agree the text specifically refers to anterior OR posterior. Note also that this text excludes the intermediate pituitary, which produces alpha-MSH and beta-endorphin. Hypopituitarism is a general term for the whole pituitary.
