Spanish term

pailero

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Mining & Minerals / Gems
This is a historical and current term, the name given to certain specialized workers in mines or metal works. It is still in use in Mexico. It may have to do with boiler making, but I don't really understand what it means even in Spanish. Source: Juan Luis Sariego, El estado y la minería mexicana, Política, trabajo y sociedad durante el siglo XX (Fondo de Cultura Económica, 1988). It may be an engineering rather than a mining term.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks. Given that the text refers to (historical) mines and smelters, which don't make boilers, I suspect it refers to the person who is in charge of the (possibly steam) boiler."

I agree with Nikki, but would just like to offer some extra references...

In my scientific-technical dictionary and in(www.rcglobal.com/wdirese-jpg.htm - 101k) pailero is described as a metalworker.A bit more specific than a (1) Boilermakers (caldereros), cut, shape, assemble and join metal parts to produce or repair containers that have to withstand pressure, such as ships, boilers, storage tanks, and robot shells.
(2) metalworker (metalurgico)- someone who works metal (especially by hammering it when it is hot and malleable)
