Dutch term

gelijkstelling

Dutch to English Other Human Resources
1) - het doorsturen van de aanvraag voor gelijkstelling en de voortgezette verzekering.

2) Het fonds begeleidt u en geeft u duidelijke en bruikbare informatie, onder andere over de modaliteiten van stopzetting, de voortgezette verzekering, de gelijkstelling wegens ziekte, en de pensioenmaterie.

Who can tell me what "gelijkstelling" means in these contexts and what would be a proper translation of the term to English?

TIA

Discussion

Ron Willems Feb 3, 2010:
footnote I'd say this calls for a footnote in the translated text: use "equation" (in the sense of "making equal") or something similar between quotes and explain this in a short footnote, using the info in Lianne's ref.
Lianne van de Ven Feb 3, 2010:
to Chris I understand your suggestion of "credits" but I also think this concept is so embedded in the system (i.e. localized), often expressed in points, that I am not sure it will solve the problem either. Maybe "compensation" or compensation calculation instead of equivalency?
Chris Hopley Feb 3, 2010:
Belgian context When I said "it's not apparent to the uninformed reader what is being equated to what" I meant that knowledge of the Belgian context is essential to understanding the text: "gelijkstelling wegens ziekte" means something very specific. I can't help feeling that "equality/equivalence due to illness" is not really going to help the reader understand what the Dutch text means (see extra note to my answer).
Alexander Schleber (X) (asker) Feb 3, 2010:
The entire source (a Belgian text) is rather unclear. I simply translated it as equivalence, which is also a one-to-one translation, even if it does not entirely fit the context and something else might be meant here, which, by the way, is also not explained to the Belggian reader.

equality

Or "equating" - I think.

Since even Dutch people have problems with this word, hopefully your source gives some explanation.

"Gelijkstelling wegens ziekte
arbeidongeschiktheidsverzekering."

equivalence

Lianne's explanation is good, but I feel this is a more appropriate word. Periods of sickness and invalidity are treated as equivalent to periods of work.

Dutch term (edited): gelijkstelling wegens ziekte

+/- social security credits

I agree with Lianne that this is a tricky one to translate. Her ref. and others on the web explain matters. But I think the essence of the idea is that if you are self-employed and and unable to work due to ill health, you can claim 'social security credits' for the period of sickness.

You might need to rephrase the English slightly, but this should provide an intelligible English translation - the concept of 'equivalence' doesn't really help much as it's not apparent to the uninformed reader what is being equated to what.

E.g. "het doorsturen van de aanvraag voor gelijkstelling" -> "forwarding the claim for social security credits".
