For trial of genetically engineered plants, that have to be segregated in order to avoid release into the environment.
I asked a similar question, "pollen trap row".
Typically the variety used to plant the ***border row*** should be planted at a density comparable to the trial plants.
The width of the ***border rows*** (alternatively called guard rows or pollen trap rows) is species-specific and the authorized party and trial manager should consult with regulatory authorities to determine if border rows are acceptable for a specific species and, if so, how wide they should be planted.
