English to French Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime
The principal sail on a boat attached to the mast leading towards the back of the boat.

Discussion

Tom Bishop Apr 28, 2008:
Perhaps you could tell us the name of the sail (I'm guessing at "mainsail"). Any other clues would be useful as this description seems bizarre. Masts generally lead towards the sky.

mât d'artimont

C'est le mât le plus "en arrière" du voilier

donc "la voile d'artimont"...
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tom Bishop : But even in the Morbihan, the principal sail is surely the grand-voile, and that is set on the mainmast. "The principal sail on a boat attached to the mast.." Sounds like the mainmast to me. But the definition seems poorly written.

Example sentence:

Les mâts sont assez inclinés vers l'arrière

les mats étant le plus souvent inclinés vers l'arrière

Peer comment(s):

neutral Tom Bishop : If it were a typo for leaning, I would agree. I'd like to know the name of the sail first!

Hi Tom. Yes, I guess we all assumed it was a typo, from the structure of the sentence and that of the query. If it is indeed the sail, the whole thing doesn't make much sense, seems to me.
