確かに多くの皆様の言うとおり、ここはやはり、メッツァンジェとグレーズにより理解されたととるのが一番素直なようですね。cinefilさんのコメントにもあるように、メッツァンジェとグレーズの共著『キュビスム論』の中で、フォコニエのことも同じグループの一員として扱ったという意味合いかもしれません。〆切が近づいてくると段々焦ってしまい、少し注意力散漫になってしまったようです。お騒がせしました。

この修飾節は、あくまでthe artistにかかり、そのグループがメッツァンジェとグレーズによって、一つのグループと理解されていたんですから、フォコニエは「メッツァンジェとグレーズもみとめた画家グループ」の一員である、というのが素直な訳では？
でも結局はみなさん同じことをいってるのでしょうが。。。

それが確かなことなら、矛盾すると考えるのも無理ないですね。
as a group by Metzinger and Gleiz　”group"を動詞として捉えれば、
（grouped） byと考えられなくもありません。彼らが率先して作ったのなら、そうでしょう。

これも確認なのですが、この部分を私はこう訳してみました。
「メッツァンジェとグレーズをリーダーとすると思われる画家のグループが1911年の「サロン・ド・アンデパンダン」展に作品を出品したが、ル・フォコニエもそのうちの一人だった。」
英語を素直に解釈すると、understood by Metzinger and Gleizesですから、「メッツァンジェとグレーズによって、一つのグループと理解される」ですが、事実としては、メッツァンジェもグレーズもこのグループの一員のはずですから、ここは、
a group headed by Metzinger and Gleizeかなと思ったのですが、やはり無理があるでしょうか？

そのこととは関係ないですか？
またこの二人はキュービズムを広めたと当時に堕落させたとも言われていますね。
salon des indepandantsのカタカナ表記は、サロンデザンデパンダンですが何のこっちゃと思う人が多いからでしょう、あまり使われておりません。
ピカソとブラックが参加していないこの展覧会のいきさつが解りませんがリーダー云々とは関係なく、みなされた、了解された、と言った意味ではないでしょうか。
