In the sentence "She competes with pith and vinegar—minus the expletives—and flashes a toothy grin during Kodak moments",
what does PITH AND VINEGAR mean? The text is about a golf player, it's a girl entering the world of golf.
I found a sentence in web suggesting that "pith and vinegar" was ugly women, but it was only one instance, and I'm not pretty confident on it.
Can somebody help me?

Basicamente dizendo que ela convive com essa atitude maliciosa, de veneno ao seu redor, mas na hora da foto sorri como se nada disso acontecesse.
