The abbreviation appears in a table of an auditor's report presenting the main financial data of a U.S. subsidiary of a French firm. Comparing the figures with those presented elsewhere in the report (e.g. 81,206 here v. 81 $M) it is clear that KUSD means "thousands of U.S. dollars". My question is whether KUSD is used in that sense in such a table in English, or whether I should write in "thousands of U.S. dollars". If it is an English term of art the latter might look clumsy.

At least in the U.S., it is not common to see KUSD... In financial statements you will usually see "USD, in thousands" "000 USD" "thousand USD", etc....

I would allow either $81,206,000 or $81.206M. Adding KUSD now and again just confuses things. See The Economist Style Guide http://www.economist.com/research/styleGuide/index.cfm?page=...
