dialysis-dependency

The literature abounds with multiperspectives on the technology and related consequences of dialysis. When this study commenced there was a dearth of literature that examined the human experience of dialysis-dependency. It is not surprising that the iatrogenic aspects of dialysis-dependency have monopolised the vast majority of research energy, for without technological advancements, dialysis machines and techniques would not have developed past an embryonic stage.

German term (edited): ohne dass jedoch Dialysepflichtigkeit vorlag

without, however, dialysis being required/necessary

The previous two answerers, Kim and "Wilhelm", have got the right idea, of course. However, I think it is better to translate the phrase as a whole in this case.

Another possibility, if the subject of the sentence is the patient, would be "without being dependent on dialysis". But here I stress the qualification that the subject must be the same.
