Non-ProZ.com (asker) Jul 3, 2007: my suggestion for English Actually, since I submitted my query I have come across a phrase that describes the phenomenon in Iowa, the U.S.: "grow or vanish". Any other suggestions, anyone?

The German original sentence actually has little else than this, but the context is EU agricultural policies that forced farms to either grow much bigger or to close down altogether. Mountain farms were affected most severely, but I know of many lowland farms that had to be abandoned as well.
