Non-ProZ.com (asker) Jul 3, 2007:
my suggestion for English Actually, since I submitted my query I have come across a phrase that describes the phenomenon in Iowa, the U.S.: "grow or vanish". Any other suggestions, anyone?
Non-ProZ.com (asker) Jul 3, 2007:
some more context Thank you, Brigitte. The German original sentence actually has little else than this, but the context is EU agricultural policies that forced farms to either grow much bigger or to close down altogether. Mountain farms were affected most severely, but I know of many lowland farms that had to be abandoned as well.

How about some more context? A full sentence with this expression, for example.

agree Jim Tucker (X) : nice play on the academic "publish or perish" - not sure how to interpret the "und" but I do know Nemerov has a poem about academics in which he says of one, "he publishes and perishes at once."

agree Sarah Downing : I like this, particularly because of the assonance. I also thought of "grow or go", but I reckon yours is better.
