...они привыкли жить на "широкую ногу", совершенно не считаясь с тем тяжелым финансовым положением, в котором находился завод.

Более или менее приближенное видел "living on a grand scale", но нужен носитель яз.

@Oleg First of all, where does it say "they didn't pay money due.. etc" in the original? And even if it did, do you think that elsewhere (outside the US) ''living the life of Riley or getting high on the hog'' would be automatically equated with ''not paying the money due to one's own employees..''?? That's your logic, is it? :) I am sorry, but I find it extremely difficult to make sense of the arguments you are presenting here.
Second of all, (with all due respect) you don't seem to discern the difference between the Russian word "экстравагантный" and the English extravagant. Those are completely different meanings. And finally, just out of curiosity, I talked to a bunch of native English speakers in the Office today, grilling them about "living high on the hog" and "the lives of Riley" and guess what -- most of them had never heard either expression, a couple of guys had, but said the expressions were somewhat grandiloquent and certainly archaic and hardly ever used in common parlance.

To: The Misha In the U.S., is it deemed 'extravagant' not to pay the money due to one's own employees while spending the business proceeds to satisfy one's own desires?

Oleg Lozinskiy Jul 30, 2017:

Thank you, Maria. I am glad you appreciate the richness of English idiom.
neutral The Misha : Judging by the link you provided, Riley must have died long ago. At least in the 45+ years of speaking English, I have never met him. Nor do we Americans get high on our hogs much. We just eat them:)

To each his own. The Misha. Perhaps, I am showing my age. There are many who are familiar with this idiom. Shakespeare is dead too, and yet people read him. You strike me as a vegetarian anyway.
agree Richard Coombes : We still live the life of Riley over here, Frank.
