I understand what it is and its purpose. Just having difficulty finding a two-, three-word term. It is clear that because it can be completely open, it cannot be called "storeroom" or "warehouse". "Temporary storage area" or "supplies storage" are too vague... Any ideas?

Comment: "I combined this answer with the Oleg's (which was pretty good except for the word "expandable", which is probably not the right word) and ended up with this:
"temporary storage of raw materials and semifinished products intended for immediate consumption in the production process".
I'm sure in this context, "промежуточный" means "temporary", especially in the case where the material can be placed within an unenclosed area...obviously for temporary storage."

The Texas casting facility, acquired in April with the purchase of Columbia Pacific Aluminum Corp., will be used as an interim warehouse depot, to serve the Texas market with billet supplied from other Indalloy facilities, until the casting operation is restarted.

Doesn't the word "stockpile" implies that it was gradually accumulated, which is not the case here. It seems they move the material from the warehouse before the work shift begins, then use the material until it is depleted by the end of the shift; then they repeat this procedure for the next shift. In other words, from the fire prevention stand point, the objactive of this storage method is to avoid any stockpiling...
