Jan: Suburbs certainly can be this far away, I am a Londoner and lived in a suburb this far away for many years I think this question is being made unnecessarily compliquée

I do, of course, mean "banlieue" rather than "banlieu".

Since nobody really seems to understand what I'm after, here's another example: In France, the capital region is known as the "Ile de France", which comprises the city of Paris and other surrounding areas and towns (which themselves constitute the "banlieu"). From my understanding of the German text, "Verflechtungsraum" refers to the "banlieu", which in my French-English dictionary is translated as "suburbs". However, IMHO suburbs can't be 30 or 40 kilometres from a city, as some parts of the banlieu definitely are (I should know: I'm a banlieusard!). That help any?

If only it were that easy. This is from some vague official eurospeak document already translated from another language (Argh!), though I suspect they are talking more about outlying areas like suburbs. Connurbations and metropolitan areas sound to me like the whole lot (e.g. in your case, "Greater Berlin" comprising Berlin and all areas up to and including Potsdam). What I think what they are after here is the "greater" bit rather than "intramural" city itself.

Hi Jan. What's wrong with connurbation or metropolitan area (I'd've suggested the latter)? Does it in this case extend to an even greater area? Any particular location involved here?
