Και η ελληνική έκφραση δεν εμφανίζει αναφορές Πάντως και η ελληνική έκφραση δεν εμφανίζει αναφορές στο google. "προσλήφθηκε στο Π.Ι." εμφανίζει μόνο 1. Και δοκίμασα και άλλες παρεμφερείς "προσελήφθη στο Π.Ι.", "προσλήφθηκε στο περιφερειακό ιατρείο" και επίσης δεν εμφανίζουν αναφορές. Βέβαια, καλό εργαλείο το google και οι αναφορές σε αυτό, αλλά δεν είναι και η απόλυτη αρχή. Νομίζω ότι πρέπει να επικεντρωθούμε στο αν μπορεί να αποτυπωθεί η ουσία. Για παράδειγμα, η έκφραση "hired at * hospital" μπορεί να βγάζει χιλιάδες αναφορές, όμως δεν προσλήφθηκε σε νοσοκομείο. Άρα νομίζω ότι πρέπει να επικεντρωθούμε στο ποιος είναι ο καλύτερος δυνατός όρος για να αποδόσει την έννοια του περιφερειακού ιατρείου έτσι όπως χρησιμοποιείται στην Ελλάδα.

Wrong reason It sounds wrong because the preposition doesn't fit. However, "was hired by the rural medical practice" and "was employed in the rural medical practice" both sound fine to me. As Sofia and I have both pointed out, "practice" in this case refers to the institution or establishment where a doctor sees patients, not to the performance of a physician's duties. That's why it's quite all right to use it in the plural.

Indeed, "rural medical practice" is correct but not as a location where someone was hired at, which was the point I was trying to make. Since the context is "Mrs. ... was hired at the x" I think "was hired at the Regional Medical Center" is more appropriate. "was hired at the rural medical practice" sounds wrong, I think, in both UK and US English.

Which English? I don't have any problem with a phrase like "was employed in the rural medical practice of Eratyra". However, this may reflect my British background. In the UK it's common to talk about, for example, "a three-doctor practice", even when referring to the National Health system.

It may be different in the US, and hence in American English, and as for Australian, South African, and so on ... who knows?

I think the "correct" answer to this question will probably depend on the style of English that is required by the end client.

I agree with Eliza that "hired at the rural medical practice" is wrong. No native speaker would ever say that. However "rural medical practice" gets 346,000 hits on Google.

to Sofia Poulou: Medical practice is, of course, the practice of medicine, i.e. the act itself (as in: I am doing my practice). When it becomes a noun in this context (medicine) practice is almost always a PRIVATE practice. You do not say "I am working at a public practice". You say "I am working at a hospital/medical center/ etc." By contrast, it is customary to say "I was working at a private practice". To translate the above text as "...was hired at the rural medical practice of Eratyra" sounds quite wrong/odd to my (native) ears.

disagree Philip Lees : Medical Center would be Κέντρο Υγείας, like the Κ.Υ. Σιάτιστας in the poster's example. It's clear from the context that the Π.Ι. Εράτυρας is subsidiary to the Κ.Υ. Σιάτιστας. See my discussion entry for this topic.

Nevertheless, "hired at the rural medical practice" is wrong. See google: "at the rural medical practice" just 1 (!) result, "at the rural medical center" 65900 results. Perhaps "regional clinic of Eratyra, subsidiary of the Medical Center of Siatista."

Rural medical practice

Το ΠΙ είναι σίγουρα περιφερειακό ιατρείο και αφορά τα ιατρεία όπου οι γιατροί κάνουν τα αγροτικά τους.

Αρχικά κι εγώ σκεφτόμουν το regional, ωστόσο ενώ αποδίδει στην κυριολεξία τον όρο, δεν αποδίδει αυτό που είναι το αγροτικό ιατρείο στην Ελλάδα. Θέλει προσοχή γιατί οι δομές στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό δεν είναι αντίστοιχες και δεν μπορούμε να παρουσιάσουμε το αγροτικό ιατρείο σαν κέντρο υγείας.

Νομίζω επίσης ότι το practice αφορά τις περιπτώσεις όπου υπάρχει στην ουσία ένας ιατρός. Και ξεχωρίζουμε το ιδιωτικό ιατρείο με τον όρο *private* πριν το practice.
Εγώ επέλεξα τον όρο για να δείχνει ακριβώς ότι δεν είναι κέντρο με κλινικές, ειδικότητες, μηχανήματα κλπ, και με έναν γιατρό.

neutral Vicky Valla : με τον ορισμό του ΠΙ που δίνει η Σοφία συμφωνώ απόλύτα, αλλά νομίζω ότι το "Regional Medical Center" αποδίδει πιο σωστά το "περιφερειακό ιατρείο". ΕΠίσης έχω την εντύπωση ότι το "practice" αφορά ιδιωτικά ιατρεία και όχι δημόσια (όπως είναι τα Π.Ι.)

V το practice αφορά την άσκηση της ιατρικής, γι' αυτό και λέμε *private practice* όταν μιλάμε για ιδιώτη
