Tony M Nov 27, 2013:
@ Asker OK, in that case, it makes sense: 'furnace' is used for a domestic heating boiler in US EN, and 'rad' is even more widespread in the US than in the UK — though as a Brit, I've grown up hearing 'rad' for ages, as 'in' technical jargon; anyone who comes into the shop and asks for a 'radiator' immediate betrays his/her status as a lay(wo)man ;-)

Note that 'rad' is pronounced with a short 'a', just like 'radiator' (US pronunciation!); were it to stand for 'radiant', it would have to be pronounced with a long 'a' (= sounds like 'raid') in order to match 'radiant' — only it isn't!
lea_bc (asker) Nov 27, 2013:
It is US English. It is actually a home heating system using wood. Yes, rad looks like an abbreviation of radiator, you are right, Tony. Thanks.
Tony M Nov 27, 2013:
Context? Could you tell us a bit more about this, please? For a start, US or GB? And is this an industrial or a domestic installation?

'rad' is a common form for 'radiator' — it's no longer even really an abbreviation, everyone just calls them 'rads'; seems likely if this is a central-heating boiler (and the word 'furnace' is used differently in the US and GB, hence my question)

radiating section

neutral Tony M : Probably more likely 'radiator' — it might be the section that heats the radiators, say, instead of the hot water; or a boost stage. Furnaces don't usually radiate directly.

Merci Gilou!
neutral FX Fraipont (X) : that's "combustion chamber", not "rad" ... : http://www.mainewoodfurnaces.com › ... › // et bien non - "rad" ne veut pas dire "chambre de combustion". En plus, votre référence concerne un poêle de masse, pas une chaudière.

Le demandeur parle de: 'This is a part of a wood furnace. The document says the furnace has a "secondary rad section". Oui cela veut aussi dire combustion chamber. Vous voyez ça où le mot 'boiler' (chaudière)?
