Here is the context:
سئوال معلم باعث شد که زن چشم هایش را از علی برگیرد

She was staring at him for a long time and then the teacher asks her a question and that's when she "looked away"? But" to look away" does not seem to convey the first part, the gazing; while چشم از او برگرفت seems to inform us of a prior gazing act.

Any ideas?
