to become a by-word for disgrace/to fall into disgrace Explanation: انگشت نما شدن در فارسی بار معنایی منفی داره و به معنی رسوا یا ضایع شدن پیش چشم دیگرانه، و این یعنی کسی که انگشت نما میشه در یک زمینه، مثلا در اجتماع یا در یک فیلد کاری دیگه اعتباری واسش نمیمونه و به مظهر عملکرد نامطلوب یا حتی مایه ننگ و رسوایی تبدیل میشه By-word= one that personifies a type/ one that is noteworthy or notorious Disgrace=embarrassment and the loss of other people's respect, or behaviour that causes this https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/fall+into+disgrace https://abadis.ir/entofa/byword/ |

become the object of fingerpointing Explanation: this is practically the same as in Persian -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 hrs (2022-07-19 15:47:30 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I have always heard it used in Persian in a negative context...this English usage is also negative. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 days (2022-07-23 23:23:42 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I would say my suggestion is perfectly relevant. However, we could say: They are frequently pointed out. They are frequently targeted. (I like this one.) |
