German term or phrase: abnehmen (nahm den Teilnehmer die Verpflichtung ab)
Text:

The text describes a manager's conference within a company and the goals they have set for the next fiscal year. The excerpt above comes toward the end of the text.
To my knowledge, the primary meaning of "abnehmen" is to reduce or diminish, but I can't quite make out whether that is the case here. After saying that the goal is to produce positive numbers in the coming fiscal year, does the phrase mean that the Vorstandvorsitzender then retracted a bit and asked the participants (the managers) to "rigorously pursue these objectives" (Ziele konsequent zu verfolgen)?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

agree  Kieran McCann: something stronger than 'asked' is implied by the original eg 'obtained a commitment from...' or similar
