Dutch term

anticiperen op de verwachting

Dutch to English Bus/Financial
I'm not sure whether this is actually tautology, or whether I should be translating this as 'anticipating the prospect of'. Why would the Dutch have used this phrasing in the following sentence:
In de afgelopen maand hebben we voorzichting geanticipeerd op de verwachting dat het economisch dieptepunt nabij was.

Selected

Comes close to a tautology I think.

'In the past month we prudently acted in anticipation of .....'

As a matter of interest, "anticipate" is very often erroneously used in English in the meaning of "expect", whereas to my way of thinking these two words are not synonymous.

we anticipated the prospect of a downfall...

or something along that line, is indeed correct.
As you stated, it looks a bit like a tautology at first sight, but your context reveals a different story, which could read more or less as follows:
'we anticipated the (general) expectations of a worsening economy (e.g. high(er) inflation is expected, stock exchanges will perform badly, etc) and, therefore, we e.g. sold some of our stock, kept more cash , invested less, etc because you never know etc'.
Sound thinking, I say :)
