Dutch term

storting in levensloop

Dutch to English Bus/Financial Law (general) Company regulations
Any help figuring out what it means in this context will be very much appreciated. Thank you!:
Er is discussie over de à la carte dagen die aan leden van het senior management worden toegekend. Deze dagen zijn niet duidelijk geoormerkt, waardoor ze anders behandeld worden dan de dagen uit de XX à la carteregeling. Dit zou opgelost kunnen worden door de dagen te oormerken als ADV-dagen die komen te vervallen indien ze niet aan eind van enig jaar zijn opgenomen. Alternatief is storting in levensloop. Dit zal aan de senior managers kenbaar worden gemaakt.

Contribution to career provident fund

These are not life cycle savings since they only start when you are employed and cease when you are not. Moreover, the monies (contributions) set aside can be used for a number of purposes, including accelerated retirement, extra leave, etc.

Dave's reference to a fund for children's studies is most unfortunate. My suggestion refers to someone's career not to his/her children or their studies. Of course there are no hits on Google. It is a term that has to be 'invented'. Sometimes translators have to leave Google hits for what they are and have the courage to use their imagination.

agree Dave Calderhead : Career savings scheme (levensloopregeling) - used by British Embassy in the Hague - lets start disseminating this version (again in my case at work) (:-{)>

We should stand our ground and not be overruled by Dutch speaking accountants. That would prevent such monumental howlers as 'fiscal unity' and 'participation exemption' from entering the language. We as freelance should set the standard.
agree writeaway : levensloop is most definitely career. can't see how this could be translated correctly without using career somewhere at least.

I have no qualms with 'career savings scheme' as an alternative to 'career provident fund'.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I think I will use "career savings plan" (The word "scheme" in the US sometimes has a shady connotation. Thank you!"

just further info.....

Here´s two links to at least help you along in figuring out what it is at all.

"Op 1 januari 2006 gaat de levensloopregeling van start. Met de levensloopregeling kunnen werknemers sparen om in de toekomst een periode van onbetaald verlof te financieren."

The trouble is that there probably isn´t a perfect translation for the term yet, since the dutch government hasn´t even implement this new piece of legislature yet.
You´ll have to make do with a description i´m afraid :)
along the lines of: Occupational account for future special leave...

good luck!

Decided to go with career savings scheme for 'levensloopregeling' - the British Embassy is good enough substantiation for me.

Thanks, Kate. (:-{)> and for the further explanations to Asker - I am sure she will appreciate them!
agree vic voskuil : excellent term!

Thank, Vic (:-{)> Zalm's English speech writer must take some of the kudos ;-)
neutral jarry (X) : Mr Zalm may be a good minister but he is not an authority on the English language by any stretch of the imagination. His speech writer is more than likely a Dutch native speaker official sitting in dusty office somewhere in The Hague.

I agree Jarry, but at the moment Zalm's English speech writer must take some of the kudos or blame for this term // I met some of the MF translators - UK English graduates and native speakers!
neutral writeaway : if you open Van Dale and simply translate levensloop one word at a time, you will get a trusted Dunglish result-life cycle. never mind the fact that in HR terminology, a levensloop is a career.

I agree, P. See my note to Jarry's answer below - sometimes the current is so strong it is impossible to swim against it and make headway - then the man who pays the piper calls the tune, alas.// Piper in revolt - see above (:-{)>
