Dutch term
gezellig
Dutch to English
Other
I've used this word whilst speaking to an American friend of mine, to express a certain kind of atmosphere, if you will. However, I found giving a proper and fitting definition of it extremely difficult, if the definition were to be less than several pages long, if you get me. I do English teaching, but find this quite a tough nut to crack.

cosy, pleasant, nice
I think these would be better explanations, but agree there is no specific word that translates the exact meaning of the word. Obviously the most appropriate word would depend on the context.

Comment: "Yes, I think these words get closest to the charge 'gezellig' carries with it - and I believe that 'nice' would do best, as a translation, especially because 'nice' is comparably versatile a word as 'gezellig'.

great
Als je gezellig als stopwoord gebruikte, dan gebruiken de amerikanen veelal "great". Tieners houden liever van "cool" of "groovy". Deze uitdrukkingen veranderen met elke generatie. Allen drukken ze een sfeer uit van tevredenheid. Zo volgende maal zeg je maar tegen je Amerikaan "Cool Man"

Previous explanations are all true, except 'cosy' (=bodily comfort)
However if you know the context you can find a specific english word.
Examples: 1) congenial (a warm atmosphere with friends)
2) Fun (enjoying oneself doing something, maybe with friends)
3) enjoyable (self explanatory)
4) a good time/a great time
