Decribing personal characteristics of a person during childhood: "In school, she was a leader." Meaning she took initiative and others followed. (This does NOT mean that she was the leader of a group or meeting. It's describing an overall character trait.)

The English word "leader" is often used in French with the same connotation. If you want a purely French word, "sommité" is akin to a person who is a "leading light."
