A rock consisting of small, hard, sharp-cornered, angular fragments, or a rock, the cuttings from which, produced by the action of a drill bit, are hard, sharp-cornered, angular grains, which grind away or abrade the metal on bits and drill-stem equipment at a rapid rate.
Example sentences:
Coiled tubing drilling was selected due to the small production casing and the aggressive curve section buildup rate in the hard, abrasive formation. (Hart Energy Publishing, LP )
In general, an impregnated diamond bit with a low identifying number such as “D2” would be used to drill a relatively soft, fractured and abrasive formation. (Dimatec Inc)
If used in the correct rock type then the drilling speed is faster than with other bits designs. These bits can't be used in soft and high abrasive formation rocks. (Rod Pietsch)
