could this be short for non destructive examination ?

context: testing of steel castings

The above answer is right and your instinct was right too;

NDE means Non-Destructive Examination.
But do you know/care to know what that is?
NDE is done frequently on welds (or perhaps in castings too) to check the integrity of the metal in the weld.
This examination could be just visual, it could iclude the use of die to show cracks, it could employ the use of X-rays to detect internal imperfections, or it could also be a magnetic particle test (MPT), again to detect cracks.
