French term or phrase: raquette

This is a type of exterior light fitting.

"Dix appareils du type 'RAQUETTE' équipés chacun d'un ballon fluorescent à l'europium de 400 W, 230 V, 50 Hz, seront placés sur les pieds du portique, pour éclairer en veille les alentours de l'engin. Chaque raquette sera fermée par une vasque plastique et équipée du ballast compensé, incorporé. De plus, les 'raquettes' seront commandées automatiquement par l'intermédiare d'un interrupteur crépusculaire 'LUMANDAR' tandis qu'un commutateur permettra en plus la commande forcée et l'attêt de ces appareils."

So this appears to be a type of night light, but not one I've heard of.

BTW, the "portique" mentioned is a ship-to-shore container crane.

I was thinking of a lamp-post but just the top section of a streetlight fitting mounted on the crane structure. Your tennis raquet idea may be correct, though - frilly or not! Looks like a translator's note job.

Don't worry; I shan't be using "frame" here. I just wanted to let Emma know that that was how "raquette" was translated in her reference (or vice-versa, as I said. As it's a Philips document, I'd have thought that the original language would have been English... or Dutch).

This grill is NOT a frill, it's an important feature :)

These mount to the feet of the crane and it's hard to imagine a post type lamp there. I think it's the industrial lights that have a metal grill across the front but I don't know what they are called. The frill looks a bit like a tennis raquet.

Personally, 'frame' worries me here; I'd have said 'body', but in any case, I think this particular doc. is referring to the element by virtue of its shape, and I don't think this is applicable in your particular context

Of course it does!! Thanks, Emma! After a bit of Googling, I found an English version of the same brochure. "Frame" is the translation of "raquette" (or vice-versa) here.

Have found a reference to "raquette" on page 10 of this doc. Not sure it helps though! http://www.ciel-noir.org/pdf/iridium.pdf

Thanks, Tony. You've confirmed my suspicion that it refers to the shape of the thing. I was thinking "gooseneck" but "stalk" is probably more accurate.

I think you'll find these are the classic 'oval-on-a-stalk' streetlight-type fittings, David.
