Greek term

ανεπάρκεια των ζυγοαποφυσιακών αρθρώσεων

Greek to English Medical Medical (general)
What is the meaning of "ανεπάρκεια" here? Zygapophyseal joint failure (cf. heart failure)? Insufficiency?
Proposed translations (English)
4 +1 facet failure

Discussion

Philip Lees (asker) May 14, 2011:
Lydia Maria, the only reason I mentioned "heart" is that the phrase "heart failure" in English is equivalent to "καρδιακή ανεπάρκεια" in Greek. So I thought the same translation might apply in this case, rather than the more literal "insufficiency" or "inadequacy".
lydia maria May 13, 2011:
''aneparkeia'' generally means something that is missing.. something that s incompleted. beter say something that is not suficient. in ur text below, it s not about ''heart..something'' at all. it s just something that is not enough :)
Sofia Poulou May 13, 2011:
I would still go with failure. "Facet incompetence" shows 73 results as a phrase, whereas "Facet failure" with the word patients (so as to restrict the search to medical) 1830.
Philip Lees (asker) May 13, 2011:
Another idea I just had an idea and checked another source. I think the phrase is "facet incompetence".

Philip Lees (asker) May 13, 2011:
It's just an entry in a list of contraindications for a particular medical treatment, so the context isn't particularly helpful. I think facet failure looks good.
Sofia Poulou May 13, 2011:
Hi Philip. The term does not even come up in Greek, therefore, you should look for something quite different (such as syndrome for example). Do you have any more details that could help us figure out what it could mean?
Philip Lees (asker) May 13, 2011:
Hi Vicky. It's a back translation, so I have to stay quite close to the original. I've googled for some of the likely phrases but nothing impressive comes up.
Vicky Valla May 13, 2011:
Good morning Phillip.
Are you sure you cannot simply use "Zygapophyseal (facet) joint SYNDROME ", which is the term used in Rheumatology?

Και το insufficiency ταιριάζει αλλά το failure απαντάται συχνότερα.
Peer comment(s):

agree Vicky Valla : if we are choosing between "failure" and "insufficiency", me too i would go with "failure" but i am not sure if there is another more specific term
