primary network or core network

I think your translation "core network" was on the mark. Of course you could also use synonyms, such as primary, nucleic or the key network. Its up to the passage you are putting it into.

Dear John,

I've been recommended to translate the above as 'trunk network' - when referring to telecommunications at least.
