Source text - English Following liberation, Edda volunteered for work as a nurse in a rest home for Dutch soldiers. She derived enormous satisfaction from the job. She felt she was repaying in some small measures the prodigious sacrifices the men in her care had made for all those who had lived under the pernicious dominion of Nazism. It was an epoch that would haunt her forever.
‘The war’, she said once, ‘left me with a deep knowledge of human suffering which I expect many other young people never know about. The things I saw during the occupation made me very realistic about life, and I’ve been that way ever since. ‘Do not,’ she added, ‘discount anything awful you heard or read about the Nazis. It’s worse than you could ever imagine. I came out of the war thankful to be alive, aware that human relationship are the most important thing of all, far more than wealth, food, luxury, careers, or anything you can mention’.
