English to Spanish: Fragment of a shooting script for a Canadian film, 2007
Source text - English 12 INT. PRODUCTION OFFICE -- DAY 12
RAMIREZ shakes his head emphatically while cramming the rest
of his lunch in his mouth, waving them away.
He's 40, heavyset, in a suit, irritated.
RAMIREZ
(quick)
- No, no, no. I don't know this
man.
The walls are covered with movie posters in the "Spring Break
Madness" series. DVDs and tape stock are piled everywhere.
PETE holds a photo out helplessly. He and DAVE are both
pale, pasty, clearly hungover.
PETE
You didn't even look at his picture.
RAMIREZ
Look Mister, he did something wrong;
I don't know him.
(annoyed)
My business partner's from United
States; he does all the release forms.
If the girls don't want to flash at
the camera, they don't have to.
PETE and DAVE exchange a look.
DAVE
We heard he was a member of one of
your crews, sir. That's all. He's
our friend and he's missing.
RAMIREZ takes in these two; rumpled, tired. They're not
officials or moral majority, so why not.
He sighs heavily, takes a handkerchief from his shirt pocket,
and wipes his hands to take a closer look at the photo.
ANGLE ON PHOTO OF EDDIE
As soon as he sees it he reacts.
RAMIREZ
Mm - this is your friend?
RAMIREZ hands it right back, amused.
RAMIREZ (CONT'D)
Even his friends can't find him? I
don't know where he is either.
DAVE
So you do know him?
RAMIREZ
Eddie Reves. He was a Grip for us
once; driver another time. Spent
more time at the craft truck then
working.
(to Dave)
Got so friendly with Alejandro I
thought he was like you.
PETE glances at DAVE who looks baffled.
DAVE
You thought he was a programmer?
Realizing he's put his foot in his mouth regarding DAVE'S
orientation, RAMIREZ clears his throat.
RAMIREZ
Look, I don't really have time for
this. All I know is, when he left,
Reves took the best Craft Service
guy we ever had. Was even gonna
give him a better job on the next
show. Maybe your friend went with
Alejandro back to Mérida, that's
where he's from.
PETE takes out his pen and pad and RAMIREZ obliges him.
RAMIREZ (CONT'D)
Ancona. Alejandro Ancona.
They move to the door.
DAVE
Thanks.
RAMIREZ waves it off, picking up his lunch once more.
RAMIREZ
De nada.
DAVE stops at the door.
DAVE
Señor, if you don't mind my asking -
a company like this, you clearly
make movies all the time; all the
crew you hire, why would you even
remember Eddie?
RAMIREZ finishes chewing, dabbing neatly at his mouth.
RAMIREZ
Easy. He gave me a sob story about
helping some woman in trouble - he's
charming, I'll give him that - I
gave him an advance on his pay and
he never came back. Took my best
guy with him.

RAMÍREZ mueve la cabeza con vehemencia mientras se atiborra
el resto de su almuerzo, haciendo con la mano un gesto de que
lo dejen solo. Es un hombre de 40 años, de traje, e irritado.
RAMÍREZ
(impaciente)
- No, no, no. Yo no conozco a este hombre.
Las paredes están cubiertas con pósters de películas de la
serie “Spring Break Madness". Hay montones de DVDs y rollos
de película por todas partes.
PETE, visiblemente desanimado, se queda sosteniendo una foto.
Él y Dave lucen pálidos, desaliñados, evidentemente crudos.
PETE
Ni siquiera vió la foto.
RAMÍREZ
Mire joven, él hizo algo malo. Yo no lo
conozco.
(molesto)
Mi socio es de los Estados Unidos y él se
encarga de todas las cartas de
consentimiento.
Si las chicas no quieren desnudarse ante
las cámaras, no tienen que hacerlo.
PETE y DAVE intercambian miradas.
DAVE
Supimos que era miembro de uno de sus
equipos, señor. Eso es todo. Es nuestro
amigo y está desaparecido.
RAMÍREZ deja pasar a los dos tipos cansados y desaliñados.
¿Por qué no habría de hacerlo si no son oficiales, ni mayoría
moral?
Con un hondo suspiro, del bolsillo de su camisa saca un
pañuelo para limpiarse las manos y tomar por fin la foto.
ÁNGULO EN LA FOTO DE EDDIE
Tan pronto la mira, reacciona.
RAMÍREZ
Mmm - ¿éste es amigo suyo?
RAMÍREZ devuelve la foto sonriendo.
RAMÍREZ (CONT.)
Si ni siquiera sus amigos pueden
encontrarlo, ¿qué voy yo a saber dónde
está?
DAVE
¿Entonces, sí lo conoce?
RAMÍREZ
Eddie Reves. Trabajó para nosotros una vez
como operador de cámara y, más tarde, como
chofer. Luego pasó más tiempo trabajando
en el camión de utilería.
(a Dave)
Se hizo muy amigo de Alejandro. Pensé que
era como ustedes.
PETE voltea a ver a DAVE, quien luce sorprendido.
DAVE
¿Pensó que era programador?
Consciente de haber metido la pata, RAMÍREZ afina la voz.
RAMÍREZ
Miren, realmente no tengo tiempo para
estas cosas. Lo único que sé es que,
cuando se fue, Reves se llevó al mejor
encargado de utilería que teníamos. Yo
hasta le iba a ofrecer un mejor empleo en
el siguiente show. A lo mejor su amigo se
fue con Alejandro a Mérida, de donde éste
venía.
PETE saca su pluma y su libreta y RAMÍREZ accede a cooperar.
RAMÍREZ (CONT.)
Ancona. Alejandro Ancona.
Caminan hacia la puerta.
DAVE
Gracias.
RAMÍREZ agita la mano en señal de despedida y vuelve a su
almuerzo.
RAMÍREZ
De nada.
DAVE se detiene en la puerta.
DAVE
Espero no le importe señor, pero, en
una compañía como ésta, en la que
hacen películas todo el tiempo y
contratan a tanta gente, ¿cómo puede
acordarse de Eddie?
RAMÍREZ termina de masticar, limpiándose la boca con cierta
delicadeza.
RAMÍREZ
Muy fácil: porque me vino con una
historia truculenta de cómo trataba
de ayudar a una mujer en problemas.
Es un tipo agradable, lo admito. Le
dí un adelanto de su sueldo y nunca
más volvió. Y encima se llevó a mi
mejor hombre.

Bio
Geographer
by formation, and linguist by vocation, my endless quest for knowledge and
intercultural communication has led me to work on translation.
Living,
studying and working in several countries has given me the opportunity to not
only ‘acquire’ languages first hand, but also learn to appreciate them in their
uniqueness and become fascinated with the art of translation. A sharp sense of
grammar from early school days, and a passion for etymology, semantics and the
history and politics of language have been my most loyal companions throughout
my life.
During my
university years, translation was an essential tool for the academic tasks of
teaching, writing and the editing of a Geography journal with international
distribution. In the academic environment, everybody needed the help of a
translator, and so I became the preferred pro-bono reader and translator of
texts around...
Time and
experience would provide the self-confidence needed to establish myself as a
freelance translator and editor. And so I embraced the on-going endeavour of
constantly improving my skills through both formal tuition and personal
research and practice.
Over the
last ten years, I have delivered a substantial number of professional
translations and edited countless texts, mostly of an academic nature—books,
articles and dissertations from various scientific fields. But I have also
worked with other text forms, such as technical manuals, film scripts, and commercial
advertisements.
