Mercedes Azpiroz, Manager of Skandia Global Funds for Spain and Portugal. The recent turbulence experienced in the financial markets has provoked a heated debate about the merits of quant managers. Their detractors claim that the quants were unprepared for the credit crisis, because their models failed. It is certain that in this crisis there have been periods during which the quantitative techniques back-slashed. For example when companies with attractive share prices, strong earnings estimations and good momentum – all being long-term attributes for leading companies – have been left behind by companies of the complete opposite. This is why some say that the happy days of the quants belong to the past in this volatile market where the tendency is not clear at all.
