Design is life
When talking about one of the most defining moments in his design career Angus Ho will tell you about a teacher he once knew. After talking to Angus, the 60-year-old scholar handed him a small blank white card, about the size of a business card. After picking a color suited to Angus, the teacher then took out a pen of that color and painted over the card with the pen. Text was soon revealed on the card and it became clear that it was in fact a business card. This small occurrence inspired Angus and made him realize that “the best design is a design that can be applied to everyday life.”

Body:
An Approachable Designer
A lot of good designers have an artistic nature and a sense of space that is inaccessible to most people. However, Angus Ho focuses on accessibility and friendliness stresses and thinks that interior design should be used to better the lives of all – not just about exclusive luxury and high-born art. Thus, together with an associate, Angus set up a company early on in his career, and early on it was agreed that they would work on large and small projects and treat both the same, to fulfill the needs of clients and construct the ideal space for them, regardless of the project size. Under this premise they began to work on a broad spectrum of projects, and they covered everything from residential and office design, to temple, church and even restaurant design. Out of all these design projects, Angus felt residential interior design to be the most interesting and challenging. For example the space of many residential units in Hong Kong cannot be maximized, and so Angus treats this as a challenge and uses his best spatial planning skills to remove areas which have no practical use (for instance; corridors) and make the most of the available space to increase functional usability.
“Diversification” will Succeed
With the growing popularity of interior design, many designers have been choosing to open their own firms. However, despite facing increasing competition from other firms, Angus does not waste time thinking about ways to undercut the competition. “The most important thing is to just keep doing the best you can - after all, interior design is a service industry and, in the long run, satisfying clients is the best business plan there is. As well as using our expertise to help solve problems and find solutions for clients, we also hope to enlighten clients and impart some basic design knowledge to them as well, so that they will get more than they expected.” In addition to design projects, Angus also provides many different kinds of customer service from his firm, because he believes that “diversification” will succeed. He is planning to branch out and open a home boutique to diversify his business. Angus says that more and more Hong Kong people are starting to enjoy life and pay more attention to lifestyle, and because of this household products have an ever-increasing market potential. Angus comments, “We hope to bring in more overseas products and collaborate with local designers so that they have the opportunity to sell their own designs and we have the opportunity to give customers wider choice.”
The ideal home is engaging and ever-changing
In terms of his ideal home design and style, Angus does not necessarily follow popular trends. “Many Hong Kong people like minimalist and simple styling, but this has been the trend for nearly a decade now. Hong Kong people never like to stand still for too long, and this trend has begun to change. Personalized styles are gradually becoming more popular and common, and clients are doing more to add their own voice into the design of their homes,” Angus said. Personally, Angus likes to use neutral colors and natural materials where possible, because this protects the environment and makes homes look good as well. “However, the most important thing of course is comfort of living. If something is not to one’s taste, then how can it be comfortable?” Angus believes this is key and bears this in mind at all times.
Humanized Management
As a designer, Angus already knows a lot about the aesthetic and artistic, but management is a completely different field altogether and requires a whole different set of skills. In order to more effectively manage his company and handle different design projects, Angus studied construction management to strengthen his knowledge as a head of the company. Using humanized management techniques Angus encourages the employees in his company to grow together by pushing them to participate in voluntary work to enhance their sense of belonging to the company and society, whilst also the strengthening their concern for the company’s growth.

Bio
As an expatriate living in Hong Kong since the age of two, I have been luckily enough to experience and learn to appreciate different cultures and nationalities first-hand. Growing up here I was exposed to a working way of life from a young age and, as son of a radio station manager (RTHK Radio 3), I was raised in a creative atmosphere that nurtured a taste and skill for writing within me. Now, as a 37year old with a degree in media from Westminster University, I have returned and carved out a career in Hong Kong, and I spend my time working on a multitude of freelance and part-time writing projects. With my self-employed experience I have become adept in punctuality and deadlines, and I have become capable of juggling different projects at the same time – always ready to tackle written materials, whether it be online or offline; creative or professional; edited or even written from scratch; translated, proofed or even just touched up, on any given subject.
