Source text - English This unit encourages students toward three central critical literary objectives, which are to consider an issue from multiple perspectives, to work toward constructing their own knowledge, and to engage with sociopolitical issues of human rights and relationships of power. These objectives sit within my own understanding of critical literacy, which is based on William Graham Sumner’s notion of “the critical faculty,” which he described as students’ ability to wait for and weigh evidence before believing a claim, and which enables them to “resist appeals to their dearest prejudices” when encountering new propositions and information (Paul, Elder & Bartell, 1997).
