Source text - English A CHINA PASSAGE. Much later in Hangchow
This afternoon we explored the Ling Yin Temple – really two, one guarding the other. They are Buddhist and huge. The first centers on a smiling Buddha with a superb stomach that one of our companions from Peking said he believed Americans called “a beer belly.” Right. In the second and larger temple is a yet larger, benign and didactic Buddha who, in fact, towers to sixty feet. At the back of the Buddha is a relief of incredible complexity, also rising into the crown of the temple. The central feature is a largish Buddha standing in the ocean on the head of an even larger fish. From a jug in his hand he is replenishing the ocean. It is an imaginatively conceived operation. Lined up protectively on either side of the great Buddhas are gods, ministers, scholars and generals, the latter as usual with terrifying scowls. Altogether they are a fine pair of temples, set in a rocky glade. We learned that R.M.N., ill-advised as so often, did not make it but –and I quote – “Pat came.”
Next we looked at the Jade Fountain, a modern effort at garden architecture. The distinguishing feature of the spring is the large black fish – some almost a yard long – that patrol the basin into which the water flows. They are shaped like U-boats, which they otherwise greatly resemble, and are truly sinister.
Then came the Yellow Dragon Cave, which has a yellow dragon on the side of another rocky glade. He breathes water down on the rocks below. Here we learned about bamboo breeding and culture, a subject none of us had previously encountered. Some well-bred species grow four or five inches a day and reach a diameter of six or eight inches in a single year. Then they grow no more. There is also under development a square bamboo. And bamboo with one flat side. These will be handy for construction. Also purple bamboo and bamboo of alternating colors along the stem. There is far, far more to bamboo than one thought. The small forest where all this is happening is serene and lovely.
Then we passed the University and went back to the Western Lake where we climbed Solitary Hill (which our guide now calls Isolated Hill) for a view of the site of an old summer palace of the Mings. Nothing remains. We had tea at a pavilion down by the lake. Jim Tobin drew a crowd of a hundred or so to watch him take a picture of a compelling child of about three. He gave her the picture; she gave Leontief her fan.
Then we went back to the hotel, were seen away with great courtesy, dined handsomely on the train and at 9 p.m. were in Shanghai. A large delegation was on hand to meet us. We are now ensconced in the Beautiful River Hotel, fairly new, fifteen stories and very solid. It is perhaps a mile from the erstwhile Bund – the great commercial street fronting on the Whampoa River – down but well off Nanking Road. I occupy a suite that, for its grandeur, causes my colleagues to call me Chairman. It may be a misnomer. According to Edgar Snow, Chairman Mao’s tastes are more conservative. Grand or not, it is exceedingly comfortable.

Этот день мы посвятили исследования храма Лингуин. Хотя вернее будет сказать, что это два храма и первый окружает второй. Они по-буддистки огромны. В центре первого находится улыбающейся Будда с громадным животом, который один из наших пекинских друзей назвал «пивным животиком». Вроде бы, как он считает, так говорят американцы. Ну да, есть такое. Во втором же, еще более огромном по размерам, находится куда более громадный Будда высотой в 20 метров. Позади этого колосса расположен невероятный по своей сложности узор, поднимающейся до самого купола храма. В центре композиции находится приличных размеров Будда, стоящий на голове еще большей рыбы. Из кувшина в его руке он наполняет океан. Неплохо они это придумали. По обеим сторонам, как будто защищая эти изваяния, находятся боги, министры, ученые и генералы. Генералы, как обычно, грозно смотрят по сторонам. Так же мы окончательно поняли, что Ричард Никсон до сюда не добрался, в очередной раз последовав неверному совету, но зато «Пришла Пэт» (и это цитата).
Затем мы отправились к фонтану Джейд. Этот фонтан – современное изобретение в садовой архитектуре. Только весной можно понаблюдать, как по фонтану рассекают метровые черные рыбы. По форме (и не только) они похожи на подводные лодки, да и вообще выглядят они довольно зловеще.
Следующей остановкой стала пещера Желтого Дракона, рядом с которой на каменистой опушке стоит желтый дракон. Он извергает воду на скалы. Здесь мы познакомились с искусством изготовления поделок из бамбука и культурой, о существовании которой даже не подозревали. Оказывается, некоторые виды бамбука растут на 10-15 см в день и достигают диаметра в 15-20 см за год. После этого они уже не растут. Так же здесь ведутся работы по получению квадратного бамбука. И даже бамбука с одной плоской стороной. Такие точно пригодятся на стройке. Еще увидели фиолетовый бамбук и бамбук с разноцветным стволом. Кто бы мог подумать, что мы так мало знали о бамбуке... Небольшой лесок, где все это происходило, был очень тихим и милым.
Затем мы прошли университет и вернулись к озеру Сиху, откуда поднялись на холм Уединения (наш гид теперь зовет его Изолированным) для того, чтобы посмотреть на старую летнюю резиденцию династии Мин. Ничего от нее не осталось. Затем в павильончике неподалеку от озера выпили чаю. Джим Тобин своими попытками сфотографировать ребенка-очаровашку собрал вокруг толпу из почти ста человек. Он отдал ей фотографию, а она подарила Леонтьеву веер.
После этого вернулись в отель «Beautiful River», где нас очень учтиво обслужили, и отправились на 9-часовом поезде в Шанхай. Там и пообедали. На вокзале нас встречала толпа народа. Поэтому теперь мы прячемся в относительно новом 15-ти этажном здании нашего отеля. Отсюда около километра до набережной Вайтань (замечательная торговая улочка расположенная на побережье Вампу), но довольно далеко до Нанкинской дороги. Мне достался громадный номер и из-за его размеров мои коллеги теперь зовут меня Председателем Мао. Скорей всего, они ошибаются, потому что если верить Эдгару Сноу, у Мао Цзе Дуна куда более консервативные вкусы. Хотя на самом деле не важно, что он большой, важно – что он удобный.
