Source text - English The Diorama – Created for the 1939 World’s Fair on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay, it shows what the area looked like around 1791. The Mission complex is extensive including the Church on the left, the Convent runs across the front (where the Franciscans and their guest stayed) and a long building on the right which was the granary. To the back are the shops and servant quarters. Buildings to the far right housed soldiers and civilians based at the Mission.

Translation - English This conflict that haunts the authors’ imaginary is described like an invisible war by Benjamin Stora, invisible war since it is “without front” and “without faces”. “The clear and straight lines, which divided the two main protagonists (the power and the Islamists), and the obvious circles, where the war activities where situated, have fallen apart over time […]”. Whilst the acts, as well as the actors often stay in opaqueness, the traces of these protagonists-phantoms /ghosts on the other hand are very visible: destruction, menace, anxiety and uncertainty.
According to Stora it is all the more justified to talk about an invisible war, since it is a “war without images”, which further reinforces the obscure character of this terrible conflict. The lack of images of the war in Algeria and its invisibility in foreign media are the result of a state-controlled policy, which banishes foreign journalist from the Algerian territory (e.g. impossibility to obtain a visa) and makes all visual representation difficult through a rigorous censorship. As for the local journalists, they are faced with strong restrictions, which worsen further with the arrival of the code of the media (a “penal code bis” according to Leїla Marouane). Additionally, journalists figure amongst the preferred targets of the fundamentalists and are often exposed to death threats. In consideration of these facts, it is scarcely surprising that “Algeria escapes from outside view” as Benjamin Stora summarizes one of the specificities of this war.
