I'm a university degreed (BA/MA) native Korean who has been doing freelance English/Korean translation and interpretation in the US since 1995, regularly tackling large and small medical, technical, legal, and commercial projects.
You might say that linguistics is in my DNA, passed on to me from my father. Back on the small farm in South Korea where I grew up, dad spent hours writing poetry and practicing calligraphy while mom did the heavy work in our rice fields. Dad taught me to read Chinese characters and gave me a deep appreciation for the fine art of communication. I'm pretty much a perfectionist so sloppy work upsets me.
Recently, my work has shifted from mostly written translation to mostly verbal interpretation. I've purchased new equipment and setup a Zoom studio in my office to better accommodate virtual assignments such as legal depositions, parent/teacher conferences, and court hearings, but a surprising amount of my work is still in person.
I enjoy interpreting for quality management system (QMS) factory audits, and I've supported a number of successful KGMP certification and Korean
KC audits. I'm always impressed with the dedication and effort
both the factories and audit teams put into these exercises.
Recently I had the honor of serving as an International Visitor Liaison with the International Visitor Leadership Program, US-ROK Partnership, traveling cross country with a delegation of Korean leaders. I've also been pleased to interpret for a training
session of esteemed Korean judges at the Tucson Superior Court.
Not everything is that serious. Actually, some of my jobs have been pretty amazing such as supporting the production of a TV documentary for the Korean J-Golf channel. I followed that up with a day-long in-person golf training session with a top golf pro and some Korean golf instructors and then a week-long training of some Korean pro-shop owners in golf club fitting. For two seasons, I interpreted for the Intentional Baseball Umpires participation in MLB's Arizona Fall League games.
