English to Hungarian: Koen Vermeir, The Demarcation Problem Revisited / A demarkációs probléma felelevenítése General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Philosophy
Source text - English One might judge scientists according to their own contexts, taking recourse to a more descriptive mode while remaining normative. As I have already indicated, the category of ‘science’ did not exist before the eighteenth century in a sense that matches the current concept of ‘science’, which makes earlier classifications problematic. Furthermore, it is a hazardous task to determine the right context, because as I showed above, protean categories render such judgements problematic. Contexts are not as stable or homogeneous as they are often presented. One might, for methodological reasons, imagine an ‘ideal witness’ who has access to all relevant material, who is without political or other allegiances (something like the ideal local sociologist), and try to make a description/judgement from this perspective. Such an ‘ideal witness’ would embody the general presuppositions and intellectual framework of a period. In the case of the divining rod, for instance, we might say that the experiments and results satisfied all current scientific standards, and that the efficacy of the rod had to be accepted. This case also suggests that there were different scientific standards at play in the province versus the capital, even if these standards were never made explicit. As a methodological precept, the approach of imagining an ‘ideal witness’ might be worth striving for, but as a practical precept, it is doomed to fail in difficult cases. How do you define in general the ‘current scientific standards’, and how do they relate to the scientific standards actually applied in practice? An ‘ideal witness’ will have at least as much difficulties to demarcate the practices of his time, as we have to demarcate ours, which brings us full circle again.
Translation - Hungarian Megpróbálhatjuk a természettudósokat saját kontextusukon belül megítélni, utat találva így egy leíróbb módszerhez, ám mégis normatívnak maradni.
Hungarian to French: Az Uralkodónő / L'Impératrice (Tarot) General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Esoteric practices
Translation - French - 1) Bonjour, chère Impératrice !
