Translation - English December is synonymous with celebration. It’s a time of feasts, dancing and family gatherings, where alcohol is a lively and welcome guest. Many celebrate with champagne while others prefer wine, beer or liquor. I for one choose sangria; it’s so versatile you can even use it to make paletas!
Originally from Spain, sangria has become a staple drink in Latin American countries like Argentina, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Cuba, Peru, Dominican Republic and Chile, among others. It’s also quite popular in the United States, where there’s a whole day designated to this fruity punch: National Sangria Day on December 20! I invite you to join the celebration making your own refreshing, homemade version.
The best part about sangria is that you can play around with its ingredients. Any fruit is welcomed! Traditional recipes include orange, apple, grape, pineapple and lemon. However, you can give it an exotic twist by adding mango, kiwi, passion fruit or peach.
Another key ingredient is wine (red, white or rosé). You can improvise with other alcoholic beverages like rum, brandy or vodka. In Colombia, they usually serve salpicón de frutas (fruit cocktail), which is basically a virgin sangria (where’s the fun in that!). But if you or your friends can’t or don’t want to consume alcohol, salpicón is a great alternative because the wine is replaced with clear-colored sodas or even water. You can also make a hibiscus sangria, with or without alcohol.
Enjoy the freshness of sangria and let’s add a little Olé to Christmas!
