Pour décrire à quels éléments personnels tient la part intime de son oeuvre, Mauren Brodbeck répond à Ars brevis vita longa1:
«Au bouillonnement intense d’émotions, de désirs et de réflexions. Au rêve universel et personnel, à l’abondance et l’afflux d’une multitude de désirs, de sentiments et d’espoirs.»
Sans cesse en mouvement, l’art contemporain se trouve lui-même aujourd’hui confronté au bouillonnement et aux limites des genres. Entre photographie et design, graphisme et nouveaux médias, quel instantané peut-on retenir de l’artiste genevoise ?
Née à Genève en 1974, diplômée à la fois en photographie et en design de l’Art Center College of Design de Pasadena et en production cinématographique de la Vancouver Film School, elle a réalisé et produit plusieurs courts métrages, documentaires et publicités, pour lesquels elle a obtenu de nombreux prix.
Mobilisant son art entre notre continent et les Etats-Unis, c’est à Genève qu’elle concrétise son intérêt pour les nouveaux médias (via le postgrade Immédiat, Haute Ecole d’Art et de Design) et crée Compactlab, qui fusionne ce dernier champ à celui du design et de l’art contemporain.
En dehors de son studio de concepts de communication, Mauren Brodbeck présente son travail tant dans le cadre d’expositions personnelles que collectives, (“ReGeneration, 50 photographes de demain“, Musée de L’Elysée de Lausanne).
Bien qu’elle se consacre principalement à la photographie, ses expériences croisées et son ouverture l’amènent aujourd’hui à être représentée dans plus d’une galerie d’Europe (J.J. Heckenhauer, LAS Galerie, Galerie Hartmann) et d’outre-Atlantique, tandis que des collections de renom, privées comme publiques, bénéficient de l’apport de ses productions - comme la Vaudoise Assurances, le Fonds d’art contemporain de la Ville de Genève ou le Musée de l’Elysée à Lausanne.
En définitive, si une égale abondance et un égal afflux tant des pratiques que des influences sont perceptibles chez la jeune femme, c’est qu’ils sont la résultante d’un parcours fort, à la fois cosmopolite et pluridisciplinaire, curieux et ouvert, mais surtout éprouvé.
Pourvue d’angles et de perspectives, transposée par une lentille sur aluminum ou via pixels, composée dans une savante géométrie imprégnée de fantaisie, l’oeuvre de l’artiste genevoise oscille entre kaléidoscope, film S-F et processeur Intel. C’est dans ce glissement subtil vers la fiction, du réalisme photographique à l’imaginaire numérique, que s’est formé le sas où se tient désormais Mauren Brodbeck. De cet espace émergent des fragments d’un discours narratif ramassé. Les images de l’artiste, qu’elles soient de corps architecturaux ou de corps humains, abordent la question de la posture. On retrouve dans celle de Jade ("Seven Wonders") une nonchalance et une gêne toute adolescente, semblable à celle de la Vénus de Rineke Dijkstra (Portraits à la Plage).
Le jeu de la pose devant l’objectif déclenche un acte moins innocent:
Dans ce processus, il faut tout-à-coup se construire un rôle. Qui suis-je ? Comment me perçoit-on ? Comment nous construisons-nous ?
Dans quelles dimensions ? À travers le questionnement de cette identité et de sa représentation (réelle, fictive ou virtuelle), intervient celui de la temporalité.
Plus loin dans la série, la gestuelle et la maladresse de «Juliette et Jules» nous renvoie aux «Auditions» de l’américaine Sharon Lockhart. Entre «Jules et Jim» (1962) et «L’Argent de Poche» (1976)2 que S. Lockhart pastichait, seulement quatorze petites années. L’âge d’un adolescent ?
Comment des personnes, totalement différentes, issues d’environnements et de niveaux sociaux différents, peuvent-elles adopter une attitude similaire ? Simplement parce que les notions d’identité et de révélation de soi sont une expérience commune.
Et si alors l’architecture, en étant le reflet de ce que nous sommes, de notre culture, de nos aspirations, de nos peurs et de nos rêves, n’était que la projection indirecte de notre propre intériorité, en développement, en construction ? De là, à dire en chantier ?
Il existe chez Mauren Brodbeck, lorsqu’elle photographie des bâtiments, des immeubles, des entrepôts, une dimension narrative. En cela elle est proche de Thomas Demand, l’artiste maquettiste, sculpteur et photographe, qui déconstruit l’histoire d’une image pour en créer une autre, via des univers à échelle réduite - dont le seul but est d’être à leur tour photographiés. De même façon, comment ne pas entrevoir de lien avec Oliver Boberg, lui aussi influencé par le cinéma et qui, inspiré du set design, construit des structures issues de photos et de sa mémoire ? À l’instar des deux artistes allemands, Mauren Brodbeck se joue de nos souvenirs avec "Urbanscape" et "Cityscape", où les interventions graphiques créent par ailleurs un effet optique de miniaturisation. La production d’une nouvelle réalité, à la fois reconnaissable et inconnue, brouille notre interprétation de ces images ambivalentes, déjà vues et pourtant différentes.
C’est dans ce challenge à nos conceptions de la nature de la réalité, de la mémoire, de la reconnaissance et de ce que nous présumons à propos des paysages et de la photographie que réside tout le savoir faire de l’artiste.
Le socle de l’oeuvre de Mauren Brodbeck se mouvant d’une région géographique à une autre, elle peut sans aucun doute se prévaloir de toucher à une certaine universalité, tout en préservant son originalité.
Pour elle, qui a parcouru le monde et qui s’est trouvée à la croisée de plusieurs cultures, il est certain que les questions de perception, d’origine, d’authenticité et de genre - et la façon dont elles influencent les fondations de notre individualité et notre habitat sont un sujet de proximité.

Seven Wonders
Univers merveilleux en soi, le chiffre sept revêt un caractère mystique, renfermant la perfection, symbolisant l’évolution et la révolution. Il est ici la somme de ces transpositions d’un état à un autre, du regard que nous lui portons, la manière dont nous l’inscrivons dans nos mémoires.
Mauren Brodbeck nous invite dans cette série à la fois intimiste et fraîche, à la mise à nu, à la déconstruction de ce que nous portons en nous (ou à l’extérieur de nous). Transfigurés en adolescentes métamorphoses, les à-plats chromatiques alternent entre apparition et disparition des traits, confrontant l’absence et la présence des corps, disparaissant partiellement au profit des contours qui les délimitent, ou se confondant totalement au support. Le jeu polymorphe des formes et des couleurs éclaire les couloirs de notre individualité, permettant une meilleure observation de son essence. Par ce processus de dépouillement, l’artiste en dévoile l’universalité.
De l’unité de l’être à la multitude des possibles, entre tendresse pastel et effervescence multicolore, Mauren nous donne à voir ces identités de jeunes hommes et de jeunes filles, riches de promesses en devenir - à l’image de la jeune femme, prolixe de ses pratiques transversales.
Extracoated
Nous faisons en sorte de rendre notre société désirable, jusque dans les formes de son environnement. Forte de ce constat, Mauren Brodbeck mêle graphisme et photographie avec impertinence et humour.
En recouvrant des édifices (symboles mêmes des lieux touristiques où ils se trouvent) d’une substance édulcorée et lisse, la jeune femme sème dans l’espace de joyeuses scories, qu’un Christo - s’il eût été extraterrestre, n’aurait pas reniées.
Délestés de leur pouvoir d’évocation historique, transposés avec ironie vers une valeur formelle cosmétique, les sujets ré-apparaissent gélifiés et gélifiants, en mode "Edulcolor" . À l’instar d’Alain Bublex, qui bâtit ses paysages urbains à renfort de modules (Plug-In City) et d’interventions vectorielles iconiques, Mauren distille d’irrationnelles apparitions urbaines.
Si coated désigne en langage graphique, le papier glacé dit «couché» des magazines, extracoated interroge lui, le doigt bien levé, notre culture de l’esthétisme - et notre tendance à vouloir embellir le réel à tout prix.
Demie-sphère solaire aux allures de pamplemousse géant, Bouée-Donut gonflable, clownerie écarlate ou chewing-gums bleu-Stimorol, les objets de la série extracotaed semblent avoir été oubliés en ville par les "Men In Black". Et pourtant, ils s’intègrent parfaitement à leur paysage - comme s’ils avaient toujours existé à l’état supra-naturel.
Untitled Urbanscape - Cityscape
Les volets Untitled Urbanscape et Cityscape empruntent des voies sensiblement différentes pour poser une question semblable; celle de notre perception de l’environnement. À ce sujet, l’artiste déclare:
«(...)Il fait partie d’un système "man-made" et est de diverses manières artificiel. Je simplifie les images et essaie de capturer l’essentiel, pour mieux découvrir ces espaces fabriqués, leur mise en oeuvre - et surprendre d’autres vérités».
Principalement photographiés aux transitions de la nuit et du jour, les sujets balancent entre éclairages naturels et artificiels. Les contrastes font surgir les volumes. Les lumières habillent les structures. Leur rendu sculptural s’impose dès lors dans une simplicité détonante. Ancrés dans leurs lignes de force ou par les tracés au sol, les buildings entraînent une illusion optique de réduction sur leurs objets environnants.
Nous découvrons ailleurs d’infimes détails auparavant ignorés: des angles jusque-là occultés sont dégagés par l’objectif et empiètent sur le bleu profond des ciels. La silhouette en escalier d’un pan incliné, oblige notre regard à ralentir. Les plans monochromes renégocient les profondeurs. Ainsi déployées sur le papier, aplanies numériquement, un nouveau dialogue s’engage avec elles. Mauren redessine, teintés dans la masse, ces bâtiments que notre mémoire avait cru retenir, et que nous sommes forcés de reconsidérer.
Chocolate
Gourmand, joyeux, minutieux, décalé graphiquement et dans les titres (d’ordinaire plus sobres et plus neutres dans les autres séries), Chocolate stimule l’appétit visuel comme les réalités alternatives.
Les couleurs et les formats - le plus souvent panoramiques - embrassent généreusement pop-attitude, cinématographie du réel et retranscription d’une mémoire aux multiples facettes.
En réinterprétant le quotidien d’endroits choisis par elle, l’artiste nous offre une partie de sa propre histoire, de son propre vécu. En découle une combinaison insolite, sous forme d’autoportrait in extenso, dans lequel elle compile ses multiples influences, culturelles et artistiques.
Morcellement, répétition de portions de surfaces, maîtrise implacable des nuances, des compositions et de la géométrie - qui rappelle les oeuvres d’un certain Lissitzky:
Les buildings de Chocolate se trouvent prodigieusement personnifiés par le récit pictural proposé.
Topology
Entre obscurité crépusculaire et lumière crue, Topology décrit des espaces momentanément privés de leur fonction. Tout, dans les perspectives et les points de fuite, relèvent d’une description physique, voire physiologique des lieux.
Ainsi projetées dans leur structure graphique et visuelle, des lignes puissantes chargent le sujet de l’image. Cette présence presque palpable n’est autre que le résultat d’un transfert virtuel, issu du passage éphémère des foules.
Topology appelle une temporalité, une ambiance étranges, dignes d’un roman de J. G. Ballard. Au terme fantômatique, qui suggère le vide, on préfèrera le terme fantasmatique, qui caresse l’imagination.
Cedar
Au fil de ses travaux, Mauren Brodbeck a développé une palette de techniques et un outil visuel puissants:
C’est ce qui l’a conduite à répondre avec succès, sur l’invitation de la Vaudoise Assurances, au mandat d’étude (suivi de l’achat de plusieurs oeuvres) portant sur le fameux bâtiment de l’architecte Jean Tschumi.
Fascinée par l’extraordinaire structure du siège lausannois, la jeune femme est capable de s’approprier totalement un espace et son histoire.
En s’imprégnant de l’histoire, des volumes et des matières, des structures et des couleurs du site, qu’elle étudie et répertorie minutieusement, en "décapant" notre lecture de l’architecture, elle transmet le regard singulier qu’elle pose sur ces constructions. Elles sont ainsi revisitées, remodelées. Les éléments de décors et l’essence des édifices sont capturés.
De la conversion graphique d’un motif architectural à l’inclusion de matières et d’éléments vivants du paysage, l’artiste genevoise communique à ses oeuvres une dimension anticipatoire et une curiosité omniprésentes.

Bruce - Robots
«Un immeuble banal et solitaire prend vie et adopte le langage corporel humain. Répondant au nom pacifique de Bruce (ndlr: ou de Jean-Claude, toute ressemblance avec des personnages fictifs étant réelle), le bâtiment raconte sa vie au cours dune journée de 24H, sous forme de micro-récits de 2H. Entre jeu, yoga, marche, gymnastique et sommeil, chaque séquence change en fonction de l’heure réelle (...)»
Mauren Brodbeck
L’incarnation par le simulacre ? Ou simulacre de simulacre ? De même que dans le champ de l’Intelligence Artificielle, l’attribution de comportements humains à des matériaux que nous pensons inanimés, leur confère-t-elle dès lors un statut différent ?
La matière, loin d’être immuable, l’est seulement quand on la perçoit comme telle.
Dans ces séquences composant la suite de «Robots», traits de caractères et désirs sont projetés et nous renvoient à nos propres fantasmes. Ainsi que pour le corps humain, le béton, l’acier et le verre sont composés d’atomes en mouvement, tous altérables. De l’architecture aux sciences, en passant par la science-fiction, la question reste posée: Loin d’être une lapalissade, la jeune femme s’attelle avec humour à cette question, pour le moins philosophique.

Mauren Brodbeck sous l'objectif
Artiste genevoise au talent polymorphe, Mauren Brodbeck abolit les frontières entre les différents champs d'expression pour donner vie à des images-fictions plurivoques où se fondent réel et virtuel. De "Topology" à "Cityscape", de "Chocolate" à "Untlited Urbanscape" en passant par "Extracoated" ou "Seven Wonders", chacune des séries de la photographe déconstruit les signes fabriqués par la société, confronte les cultures, questionne l'être-soi pour proposer un témoignage et une réflexion sur l'homme et son environnement. Objets non identifiés au cœur de paysages urbains stylisés, bâtiments industriels aux silhouettes désincarnés, buildings métamorphosés en robots, adolescents aux allures de fantômes iconographiques, ses œuvres épurées jusqu'à leur ultime quintessence interrogent notre perception du monde dans une polychromie aux accents pop. Vision édulcorée ou simulacre de simulacre, l'image est remodelée, ciselée comme pour livrer la clef d'un univers parallèle, étrangement familier.
"Mon travail porte sur la mémoire et la façon dont nous la traduisons et l’assemblons pour recréer une réalité plus adaptée à nos besoins, à nos envies, à nos désirs. Je m'intéresse à la façon dont nous créons et concevons notre environnement car, non seulement, ce dernier reflète une époque et une culture mais aussi traduit notre propre identité" explique Mauren. Entre représentation distanciée et intimité dévoilée, entre futur fantasmé et présent exacerbé, l'artiste se joue des paradoxes pour mieux toucher à l'universel. Car Mauren aime déconcerter. Elle sait surprendre en insufflant de l'insolite et de l'exceptionnel au cœur de la banalité, elle façonne une réalité alternative aussi fascinante que perturbante. Quelle perception avons-nous de nous-mêmes? Comment autrui nous appréhende-t-il? Que révèle notre environnement sur l'homme d'aujourd'hui? Mauren Brodbeck speaks to Ars brevis vita longa1 to evoke the personal elements that lie at the heart of her intimate work:
"The intense effervescence of emotions, desires and thoughts. The universal and personal dream, the abundant flow of multitudinous desires, feelings and hopes."
Constantly in motion, contemporary art finds itself confronted today with the effervescence and the limits of genres. Between photography and design, graphic design and new media, what snapshot can we keep of the Genevan artist?
Born in Geneva in 1974, a graduate in photography and design from Pasadena Center College of Design, and in film production from the Vancouver Film School, she has directed and produced several award-winning short films, documentaries and advertisements.
While practicing her art in both Europe and the United States, it is in Geneva that she has developed her interest in new media (through the postgraduate program “Immédiat”, at the Haute Ecole d’Art et de Design) and through the foundation of her company, Compactlab, which merges this field with design and contemporary art.
Outside her design and communications concepts studio, Mauren Brodbeck presents her work at individual and group shows such as “ReGeneration, 50 photographes de demain“, at the Musée de L’Elysée, Lausanne.
Although she works mainly in the field of photography, her cross-disciplinary experience and openness to new media bring her work to a wide audience at galleries in Europe (J.J. Heckenhauer, LAS Galerie, Galerie Hartmann) and the US, while public and private collectors are also eager to snap up her works. Recent acquisitions have been made by insurance group Vaudoise Assurances, the Geneva Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne.
Ultimately, if such an abundant creative flow can be evidenced in this young artist's work - both in terms of influences and output - it is the result of a solid, cosmopolitan and multi-disciplinary background which is inquisitive, open and, above all, true.
Comprising angles and perspectives, transposed by an aluminum lens via pixels, calculated with geometric precision and permeated with fantasy, the Genevan artist's work oscillates between a kaleidoscope, science-fiction film and Intel processor. It is in this subtle slide towards fiction, from photographic realism to an imaginary digital realm, that Mauren Brodbeck has found her niche. From this space there emerge fragments of a collected narrative discourse. The artist's images of architectural and human bodies all raise the question of posture.
The image of Jade ("Seven Wonders") reveals an adolescent nonchalance and sense of being ill-at-ease in one's body, similar to Rineke Dijkstra's Venus ("Beach Portraits"). The action of posing before the camera triggers a less innocent act. In this process, the subject must suddenly create a role. Who am I? How do others see me? How do we build our lives? On what scale? This questioning of identity and its portrayal (real, fictional or virtual) is arrested by considerations of temporality.
Later in the same series, the gesture and uncertainty of Juliette et Jules reminds us of Auditions by American artist Sharon Lockhart. Indeed, between Jules et Jim (1962) and L’Argent de Poche (1976)2, which S. Lockhart was pastiching, there are only fourteen years. The age of an adolescent?
How can people who are so totally different, from different backgrounds and classes, come to adopt a similar bearing? Simply because notions of identity and self revelation are an experience common to us all. And what if architecture, as the mirror of what we are, of our culture, our hopes, fears and dreams, was only the indirect projection of our inner lives - under development, under construction? Might we not say, indeed, a building site?
There is a narrative dimension when Mauren Brodbeck photographs buildings, apartment blocks and warehouses. In this, she is close to Thomas Demand, the layout artist, sculptor and photographer, who deconstructs the story of one image to create another, through a small scale world, whose sole purpose is to be, in turn, photographed. In the same vein, we can detect a link to Oliver Boberg, also influenced by film and who, inspired by set design, creates structures from photographs and his memory. Like these two German artists, Mauren Brodbeck mocks our memories with "Urbanscape" and "Cityscape" where the graphic blocks create an optical illusion of miniaturization. The production of a new form of reality, both recognizable and unknown, clouds our understanding of these ambivalent images which seem familiar yet different.
It is precisely in this challenge to our conceptions of the nature of reality, memory, recognition and our assumptions about cityscapes and photography, that the artist's true savoir-faire lies.
As the foundation of Mauren Brodbeck's work shifts from one geographic sphere to another, she can be sure of touching a certain sense of universality while keeping her originality intact.
For the artist - who has traveled all over the world and encountered its different cultures - questions of perception, origins, authenticity and form, and how they affect the foundations of our individuality, remain at the heart of her work.

A wonderful world in itself, the figure seven is cloaked in a mysterious character, encapsulating perfection, symbolizing evolution and revolution. Here, it is the sum of these transpositions of one state to another, of how we perceive it, and how we set it in our memories.
With this intimate and youthful series, Mauren Brodbeck invites us to consider a process of unveiling, the deconstruction of what we carry inside (and outside ourselves). Transfigured into metamorphosed adolescents, the block color prints alternate between the appearance and disappearance of features, confronting the absence and presence of bodies, partially disappearing to leave bare outlines, or melding totally with the medium. The polymorphic interplay of forms and colors sheds light on the channels of our individuality, allowing a better observation of its spirit. Through this process of disrobing, the artist reveals underlying themes of universality.
From the unity of being to the multitude of possibilities, from pastel gentleness to multi-colored effervescence, Mauren exposes us to the identities of these boys and girls, so full of promise - mirroring the young woman herself, so communicative through her cross-disciplinary art.
Extracoated
We do what we can to make our society desirable, even in the forms of its environment. With this concept in mind, Mauren Brodbeck gives us an impertinent and humorous combination of graphic design and photography.
By coating buildings and structures (symbols themselves of the tourist sites where they are located) in a sugary-smooth substance, the artist scatters cheerful trash into space - not unlike an extra-terrestrial Christo.
Deprived of their evocative historical power and ironically transposed into a formal cosmetic code, the subjects reappear jellified and jellifying in "Sweet-n-color" mode. In the spirit of Alain Bublex, who constructs module-based cityscapes (Plug-In City) and iconic vectorial works, Mauren processes irrational urban sights.
While "coated" describes the paper used in glossy magazines, "extracoated" raises questions about our culture of aestheticism and our habit of wanting to make reality more beautiful at all costs.
A grapefruit-like half-sun, an inflatable giant donut, a huge clown's red nose and Stimorol-blue chewing gum sticks, the objects in the Extracoated series seem to have been forgotten in the city by the "Men In Black". And yet, they blend perfectly into the cityscape, as if they had always existed in their supra-natural state.
Untitled Urbanscape - Cityscape
The Untitled Urbanscape and Cityscape works take quite different paths to ask a similar question: how do we perceive our environment? On this, the artist says:
"It is part of a man-made system and its diverse artificial ways. I simplify the images and try to catch the essential features to better discover these fabricated spaces, to see how they are used - and capture other truths."
Mostly photographed and dawn or dusk, the subjects flit between natural and artificial lighting. Contrasts bring the volumes to the fore. Light is used to clothe the structures. Their sculptural rendering thus dominates in an explosive simplicity. Anchored in their outlines and by their contact with the ground, the buildings create an optical illusion which makes the surrounding objects seem smaller.
Elsewhere, we discover a wealth of previously overlooked details: hitherto hidden angles are brought to light by the lens and stand out against the deep-blue sky. The sloping shadow of an inclined section slows our gaze. The monochrome views reinterpret the depths of the scene. Thus digitally processed and flattened on paper, a new dialogue is engaged with the structures.
Mauren redraws, massively dyes, these buildings that we thought we knew so well and obliges us to reconsider their relevance.
Chocolate
Connoisseur, cheerful, detailed, off-beat both in graphic design and the titles (usually more low-key and neutral in the other series), the alternative realities of Chocolate are a feast for the eyes.
The colors and formats - mostly panoramic - generously embrace pop-attitude, a film-like approach to reality and a re-transcription of a multi-faceted memory.
By reinterpreting the day-to-day life of chosen sites, the artists offers us part of her own story, her own experience. This results in a bold combination, in the form of an in-extenso self-portrait, in which she layers her many cultural and artistic influences.
Fragmentation, repetition of surface portions, implacable control of nuances, compositions and geometry - all recall the work of a certain El Lissitzky:
The buildings in Chocolate are prodigiously personified by the pictorial narrative we have before us.
Topology
Combining the darkness of nightfall and raw artificial light, Topology portrays spaces momentarily deprived of their purpose. All, in their perspectives and vanishing points, reveal a physical, even physiological, description of the places.
Thus projected in their graphical and visual structure, strong lines load the subject of the image. This almost palpable presence is the result of a virtual transfer, stemming from the fleeting passage of crowds.
Topology summons up a temporality and a strange atmosphere worthy of a J. G. Ballard novel. In place of the word "spectral", which evokes emptiness, we prefer "spectracular”, which caresses the imagination.
Cedar
Throughout her work, Mauren Brodbeck has developed a palette of powerful techniques and visual tools.
And it is this palette that inspired her to respond the invitation from Swiss insurance group, Vaudoise Assurances, to submit a work based on the famous building by architect Jean Tschumi.
Fascinated by the extraordinary structure of the firm's Lausanne headquarters, the young artist is able to completely appropriate a space and its history.
By steeping herself in the history, volumes and materials, structures and colors of the site that she studies and itemizes so minutely; by "scouring" our reading of the architecture, she shares her singular view of these constructions. They are thus revisited, remodeled. The decorative elements and the spirit of these buildings are captured for all time.
From the graphical conversion of an architectural detail to the inclusion of materials and living features of the landscape, the Genevan artist instills her works with an anticipatory dimension and an omnipresent curiosity.

"An ordinary, solitary building comes to life and adopts the human body language. Replying to the everyday name of Bruce (ed: or Jean-Claude, any resemblance to fictional characters is intentional), the building tells its life story during a 24-hour period in the form of short 2-hour narratives. Combining play, yoga, walking, gymnastics and sleep, each sequence is different depending on the time of day or night (...)"

Incarnation through simulacrum? Or simulacrum of a simulacrum? As in the world of artificial intelligence, does attributing human behavior to what we know to be inanimate materials give them a different status?
Materials, far from being unchanging, are only immutable when we perceive them as such.
In the Robots sequence, character traits and desires are projected to take us back to our own fantasies. As with the human body, concrete, steel and glass are made up of alterable atoms in movement. From architecture to science, by way of science-fiction, the question remains. And far from being a truism, the artist treats it with deserved and philosophical humor.

Mauren Brodbeck is a Geneva-born artist with a multi-faceted talent who delights in breaking down the barriers between different forms of expression, bringing to life fiction-images rich in meaning and combining the virtual and the real.
From "Topology" to "Cityscape", and "Chocolate" to "Untitled Urbanscape", by way of "Extracoated" or "Seven Wonders", each photographic series deconstructs the signs built by society, confronts cultures, and questions our very being to bring forth both a statement and a reflection on humanity and its environment.
Featuring unidentified objects set amidst stylised cityscapes, blocked out silhouettes of industrial sites and warehouses, buildings metamorphosed into robots, and teenagers with an air of symbolically wandering phantoms, her works are refined to their very essence through the use of bold colours, and force us to question our understanding of the world we live in. Whether a sweetened vision of reality or a simulacrum of an artistic representation, the image is remodelled and shaped to give us the key to a parallel yet strangely familiar universe.
"My work looks at memory and how we adapt and construct it to recreate a reality better suited to our needs, our wishes, our desires. I'm curious about how we create and shape our environment because it is both a reflection of a time and a culture, and an expression of our own identity," explains Mauren.
Between a remote representation and an unveiled intimacy; a fantasized future and exaggerated present, the artist plays with paradoxes to get closer to universal values. She introduces surprise by injecting notes of the unexpected and the exceptional into the heart of the mundane; she shapes an alternative reality that is both intriguing and disturbing. How do we really see ourselves? How do others see us? What does our environment say about us today? Through collage, film, layering, erasure, applying colour, and stretching time, the artist combines graphic art with photography to explore the limits of the visible world and unveil its hidden meaning.

Pamela Miles, founder of the Institute for the Advancement of Complementary Therapies (I*ACT), is a Reiki master and meditation teacher who lectures on complementary medicine and develops educational programs and research initiatives on energy medicine for hospitals and health care organiza- tions in the Northeast. Gala True, PhD, is a Senior Scientist and the Assistant Director of Medical Ethics at the Albert Einstein Center for Urban Health Policy and Research in Philadelphia, PA.
Reiki is a vibrational, or subtle energy, therapy most commonly facili- tated by light touch, which is believed to balance the biofield and strengthen the body's ability to heal itself. Although systematic study of efficacy is scant thus far, Reiki is increasingly used as an adjunct to con- ventional medical care, both in and out of hospital settings. This article will describe the practice and review the history and theory of Reiki, giv- ing readers a context for the growing popularity of this healing modality. Programs that incorporate Reiki into the clinical setting will be dis- cussed, as well as important considerations in setting up such a pro- gram. Finally, the research literature to date on Reiki will be reviewed aAnd evaluated, and directions for future Reiki research will be suggested.
mericans increasingly reach beyond conventional medicine to meet their healthcare needs, and research indicates that therapies based in energy medicine are a favorite choice.1,2 Consistent with findings of increased use is the recognition that
patients seldom discuss the use of these therapies with their physician, and that the majority of conventional medical providers are unfamiliar with the principles underlying these modalities. In this manuscript, we focus on Reiki (RAY kee), a biofield therapy facilitated most commonly by light touch,3 attempting to evaluate and synthesize what is known about the history, theory, and practice of Reiki, as well as give an overview of the state of Reiki research. We conclude with thoughts about
future directions for research and the development of programs that integrate Reiki into clinical care, raising questions and issues that must be considered in these endeavors.
The National Institutes of Health Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) has classified energy medi- cine therapies into 2 basic categories: biofield therapies and bio- electromagnetic-based therapies. According to the NCCAM classifications, biofield modalities are defined as those therapies intended to affect energy fields that purportedly surround and interpenetrate the human body. These therapies, which include Reiki, Qigong, and Therapeutic Touch, involve touch or place- ment of the hands in or through biofields, the existence of which have not yet been scientifically proven. Bioelectromagnetic-based therapies involve the use or manipulation of electromagnetic fields (EMFs), invisible lines of electrical force or currents. Although the existence of EMFs has been demonstrated, thera- peutic use of these fields is unique to complementary modalities such as magnet therapy.4
Biofield therapies, including Reiki, are generally accepted as low-risk interventions. The widespread use of these therapies, coupled with anecdotal evidence of efficacy, indicate a need for further study of this important category of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Because of their foundation in sub- tle energies that as yet lie beyond technology’s ability to consis- tently measure, biofield therapies present a special research challenge. An increasing number of nurses, physicians, and other healthcare providers have begun integrating biofield therapies into patient care, and a growing number of hospital-based pro- grams offer these modalities to patients and staff. The line between what is “alternative,” “complementary,” or “integrative” is often blurred when it comes to biofield therapies. Despite these challenges, efforts to describe these modalities, their practice, and their use by patients, as well as development of well-designed studies of safety and efficacy, are important and underway.
TRADITIONAL MEDICAL SYSTEMS AND REIKI
Understanding Reiki requires an awareness of indigenous healing traditions that exist alongside, and pre-date, the Western biomedical model. In these systems, the ability to facilitate heal- ing derives from knowledge and practices that are passed from master practitioner to student, who in turn becomes a master

practitioner. Such lineages of healers are seen across cultures and share common threads; however, there are always cultural and idiosyncratic variations. The indigenous traditions of China, Tibet, Africa, Russia, Native America, and India (Ayurveda) are known in the West. In Europe, the Iceman who died 5300 years ago in the Swiss Alps and was recently discovered frozen in a glac- ier was noted to have parasites in his intestines. He carried a med- icine pouch and was deemed to be self-medicating with local mushrooms. If this is true, the Iceman clearly had access to med- ical information through non-scientific means.5
Although some indigenous and traditional medical sys- tems are known to have used advanced medical technologies such as brain surgery in India and Africa, these systems often emphasize the development of skills in areas overlooked in con- ventional medicine. For example, traditional healers use reme- dies from the natural environment and focus on accessing the subtle vibrational field, which is understood to be related to consciousness. Intervening in the vibrational field is deemed necessary for lasting benefit. The training of traditional healers requires they become adept in navigating subjective realms of awareness, a skill developed through meditative techniques and disciplined spiritual practice.
HISTORY
Mikao Usui (1865-1926), a lifelong practitioner of Tendai Buddhism and dedicated spiritual aspirant, formulated the roots of what has come to be called Reiki in early 20th century Japan. He trained in a monastery as a young boy, and practiced martial arts from age 12, achieving mastery in several disciplines. Perhaps because of Usui’s background in Buddhism, Reiki is often referred to as an ancient Tibetan technique, although there is no evidence that this is true. Mikao Usui clearly referred to himself as the founder of Reiki6 and Tibetan medicine does not include hands- on energetic healing.
Those who approached Usui for healing were given a few minutes of light healing touch before being instructed in his method of spiritual self-development. The first level of teaching was freely given. Thereafter, students had to earn other levels through disciplined practice. Each student was taught according to his nature, dedication, and accomplishment. Usui’s philoso- phy was non-dualist, and he stressed spiritual unfolding through regular practice of spiritual techniques which included the use of symbols in ways reminiscent of Taoist talismanic healing images. His teaching was a system of spiritual practice; any physical, emotional, or mental healing that might occur was seen as a nat- ural by-product (personal communication, Kenneth Cohen, December 2002). Students referred to the teachings as Usui- Teate (Usui Hand Touch or Usui Hand Healing). Usui stressed the importance of peaceful mental demeanor, and offered his students 5 precepts to guide them:
Just for today, do not anger. Just for today, do not worry. Be humble.
Be honest in your work. Be compassionate to yourself and others.
In the last year of his life, Usui was approached by his stu- dent Chujiro Hayashi (1878-1940), a retired naval officer, with a request to develop the therapeutic aspects of the system separate from the stringent meditative practices. Usui agreed. After Usui’s death, Hayashi further developed the system as a practical heal- ing technique without the perceived encumbrance of spiritual practices. He called his technique Hayashi Shiki Reiki, and although Usui sometimes used the word, it is likely from Hayashi that the system came to be called Reiki, Rei meaning universal or highest and Ki meaning subtle energy,7 like the Chinese chi. (It should be noted the vibration accessed in Reiki arises from non- dual primordial chi, or Tao, as distinguished from the bioener- getic level of chi stimulated by therapeutic acupuncture.)8 Although Hayashi’s technique was simplified from Usui’s system of spiritual practices, his use of the word Reiki implied that even with his modifications, the healing technique remained rooted in spirituality, that he was accessing the same non-dual conscious vibration for healing.
Hayashi opened a small 8-bed clinic in Tokyo where 16 practitioners gave Reiki treatment in pairs. At some point, Hayashi diverged from Usui’s typically Buddhist approach of making teachings and healing available at a low monetary cost, noting that people were more engaged when paying fees for their healing.6,9 As Reiki became available beyond the circle of spiritual aspirants, it entered the medical marketplace and the issue of compensation for both training and treatment had to be addressed.
Mrs Hawayo Takata (1900-1980), a first generation American, came to Hayashi’s clinic in 1936 suffering from respiratory and abdominal complaints.9 After receiving treatment for 4 months and recovering her health,10 she became his student and practiced in his clinic. Takata returned home to Hawaii in 1937, carrying Hayashi’s instruction to bring Reiki to the West. Hayashi visited Hawaii in 1938, teaching and lecturing, and trained Takata to be a Reiki master. Hayashi signed a certificate on February 21, 1938 attesting that Takata was a fully credentialed Reiki master—the only one outside Japan at the time, and the first woman. Hayashi understood deeply that Usui wanted the teachings to be widely accessible, and was emboldened to step beyond the cultural tradi- tion that would have restricted the practice to Japanese men.
Faced with the challenge of articulating a Japanese healing technique to a largely Christian population in the socio-political climate preceding World War II, Takata pragmatically reshaped the origins of Reiki, presenting Usui as a Christian minister.6,9 She did not, however, vary the practice from what Hayashi had taught, emphasizing the foundation of consistent self-treat- ment. Takata taught and shared Reiki for many years in Hawaii. In 1973 she was invited to the mainland, where she taught for the last 7 years of her life. Takata died in December 1980, having initiated 22 Reiki masters (Hayashi and Usui each trained approximately 18).

A Review of Reiki
In less than 15 years after her death, Reiki had spread around the world and returned to Japan, although rarely accord- ing to the guidelines she taught. In the mid 1990s, several Western Reiki masters discovered a small group of students who were originally trained by either Usui or Hayashi. One of these students clarified the distinction between vibrational and bioen- ergetic healing by saying: “Usui-sensei told [us] that [the] method is a spiritual healing technique and an energy healing technique. Spiritual healing brings fundamental healing by helping us to become part of the universal consciousness, while energy healing centers around removing the symptoms of mind and body disor- ders.”6 Advanced practitioners of biofield therapies, including Reiki, conceptualize the biofield as a continuum from the vibra- tional, at the deepest and subtlest level, to the bioenergetic, closer to the physical realm. While this distinction has not been scientif- ically tested, it is important within the system of Reiki healing and essential to the theory behind Reiki, as will be discussed below. The term Reiki refers to both the healing system and the vibration accessed.
Nearly all Reiki practitioners outside of Japan today trace their lineage to the 22 masters trained by Takata. There are also two other teachers, Hiroshi Doi and Premaratna, who offer disci- plined practices descended from Usui and Hayashi. This paper uses the term Reiki to refer to the traditional technique as taught by Takata, unless otherwise specified. In accordance with the phi- losophy of Asian spiritual practices in which the practitioner is always seen as a student of the system and a “master” properly thinks of himself as a “master student,” we use the terms “practi- tioner” and “student” interchangeably.
TRADITIONAL REIKI TREATMENT
Hands-on Reiki treatment is offered through light touch on a fully clothed recipient seated in a chair or reclining on a treat- ment table. A quiet setting conducive to relaxation is desirable, but not necessary. A full treatment typically includes placing hands on 12 positions on the head, and on the front and back of the torso. Hands can also be placed directly on the site of injury or pain if desired, but the technique is neither symptom nor pathology specific.11 When even light touch is contraindicated, as in the presence of lesions, the hands can hover inches off the body.12 A session can be as short or as long as needed,9 with full treatments typically lasting 45 to 75 minutes. The receiver need not be conscious13 and Reiki can be offered during surgery.11 The practice of Reiki is primarily passive, embodying the Asian phi- losophy of non-action.14 Offering Reiki is refreshing to the practi- tioner as well as the recipient. Practitioners believe Reiki has the potential to rebalance the biofield at the deepest vibrational level, thereby removing the subtle causes of illness9 while enhancing overall resilience. Because Reiki is a holistic modality that sup- ports overall healing and well-being, it is not possible to predict how quickly specific symptoms may respond. Generally, in addressing chronic conditions, a minimum of 4 complete treat- ments is advised before evaluating clinical benefit.
REIKI TRAINING
Reiki is practiced at the First degree, Second degree, and master level, with each level having a defined scope of practice. At the core of the training, and unique to this practice, is a series of initiations, also called empowerments or attunements, which are believed to connect the student to primordial consciousness, the intelligence that permeates creation, maintaining life-sustaining functions and directing complex cellular processes, and which is the source of subtle Reiki vibration.7 This connection is believed then to be available at any time, regardless the student’s health, mental state or intention. Self-treatment is viewed as the founda- tional practice for all levels.9 Reiki practice is considered self- revealing, and students are not taught Reiki as much as they are taught how to learn Reiki. Initiation at each level marks the beginning of study at that level, not the culmination of learning.6,9
First degree Reiki is easily learned12 and appropriate for stu- dents of any age or state of health who have the desire to practice. First degree students are able to treat themselves and others using light, non-manipulative touch to precipitate a cascade of healing vibration. The effectiveness of the treatment and the recipient’s ability to discern the energy do not seem to be relat- ed.15 It is advisable to practice a minimum of 3 months before proceeding to Second degree.3
Second degree practitioners are trained in the use of specific symbols to access Reiki mentally for distant healing. First and Second degree training require 8 to 12 hours of class time each and are usually taught to groups, although private instruction may be arranged. There are 4 initiations in First degree, and 1 ini- tiation for each of the 2 remaining levels.3
At all levels, Reiki develops through committed practice. It is not necessary, nor is it advisable, to take higher initiations to improve one’s practice. The reason to study another level is to acquire that particular skill—distant healing at Second degree, or teaching and initiation at the master level. At any level, students can only advance through diligent self-treatment. In this way, Reiki masters have not mastered Reiki; they are simply students who feel called to teach, and who continue to learn through teaching. True mastery, in the sense of Usui, Hayashi, and Takata, is not a matter of receiving an initiation, but rather a life commit- ted to practice.3
Practicing Reiki 3 to 10 years creates a reasonable founda- tion for teaching. Master training is an apprenticeship of at least a year.3 When teaching at any level, it is the Reiki master’s respon- sibility to consider any unusual circumstances and use his or her discretion in customizing the training to fit the individual.6 Reiki is learned through direct transmission from a Reiki master and cannot be learned from a book.3 None of the traditional Reiki lev- els include training in either professional treatment or the dynamics of the therapeutic relationship.
The training described above is the ideal based on Takata. However, since her death in 1980, many Reiki students have not received such thorough training. Today, it is common for new students to receive less than a weekend of training and leave with the misguided impression they are now Reiki masters. One can

only grow in mastery through years of disciplined practice. Although there are several professional organizations for Reiki masters, the Reiki Alliance adheres most consistently to the standards set by Takata. It has more than 700 members in 45 countries who honor a code of ethics that includes respecting the physician/patient relationship.3 There are also Reiki masters not affiliated with the Reiki Alliance who are committed to ethical practice and the complete training and initiation of new students. It is important to note that no certificate conveys reliable infor- mation about quality of training. Thus, it is useful to include a number of factors when considering a Reiki practitioner’s creden- tials, such as consistency of self-treatment, extent of clinical prac- tice, and length of time between training at different levels. These
issues are addressed in other sections of this article.
REIKI THEORY
There is no agreed upon theory for how Reiki might work, and its mechanism of action is still unknown. For this reason, Reiki is subject to the criticism leveled at other CAM modalities by skeptics: it cannot be efficacious because it lacks a known bio- logical mechanism of action. As David Hufford has argued, implicit in this view is the belief that CAM claims will be proven to be ‘true’ or ‘false’ on the basis of present scientific knowledge, and that “the acceptance of any theoretically implausible claims would require the abandonment of current scientific knowledge.”16 This of course ends all inquiry before it begins, leaving no room for making connections between theories under- lying energy healing practices such as Reiki, Therapeutic touch, or Qi gong, and those emerging in various branches of the con- ventional sciences.
The concepts underlying energy therapies such as Reiki have theoretical commonalities with a variety of models in physics, none of which have been experimentally linked with medicine or clinical outcomes. Models in bioelectromagnetism, quantum physics,17 and super string theory18 are consistent with Asian scripture19-23 in suggesting that very subtle vibration may be the substratum of reality as we know it, and therefore such vibration may have a role to play in health and disease. For example, Jan Walleczek24 and Abe Liboff25 in the field of bioelectromagnetism offer credible scientific support for the potential role of the forces of subtle bioelectromagnetic fields in physiological processes. Walleczek in particular has convincingly demonstrated that sub- tle magnetic fields can have measurable interactions with biologi- cal systems in the area of redox potential and hydroxylation reactions. Although this area of research is in its early stages, these connections suggest that the theoretical underpinnings of Reiki and other energy therapies may not be in direct contradic- tion to scientific models.
Reiki vibration is understood to be drawn through the prac- titioner according to the recipient’s need,26 within the ability of the practitioner to carry the vibration. Beginning students often find it difficult to grasp that non-doing can be so effective. The flow of Reiki is believed to increase as the practitioner becomes inwardly more still, an understanding acquired only through pro-
longed practice. The fact that the vibrational flow is drawn by the recipient allows for great flexibility and ease of delivery. While a practitioner’s ability to be a conduit for the vibrations may vary, there is ultimately no wrong technique.9 Reiki’s self-regulatory mechanism precludes “overdosing”—even a dry sponge only absorbs to saturation. Experienced practitioners claim to notice when the healing vibrational flow decreases, at which time they move to the next hand placement.27 Recipients often sense a vibra- tional flow, sometimes feeling heat or coolness, or waves of relax- ation throughout their body, or in specific areas that may or may not correspond to where the practitioner’s hands are placed.26-28 Such experiences may be evidence of a subtle entrainment effect, similar to that of sound healing, whereby Reiki vibrations attune the recipient’s biofield to greater harmony.
Reiki is believed to rebalance the biofield, thus strengthen- ing the body’s ability to heal29 and increasing systemic resistance to stress. It appears to reduce stress and stimulate self-healing by relaxation and perhaps by resetting the resting tone of the auto- nomic nervous system. Proponents of Reiki believe this might lead to enhancement of immune system function and increased endorphin production.
Programs Currently Incorporating Reiki into Clinical Care
Table 1 provides a summary of programs that incorporate Reiki into the clinical setting. The majority of these programs have not been subject to systematic evaluation due to budgetary and time constraints. However, staff, patients, and program administrators report a number of benefits including reduced anxiety and lower use of pain medications, increased patient sat- isfaction for surgical patients,29 and decreased numbers of self- reported common gerontological complaints such as anxiety, loneliness, insomnia, and pain among older individuals living in the community. Reiki can easily fit within the harm reduction model30 and can be successfully used in self-treatment in combi- nation with appropriate medical/psychiatric care by people with combined HIV and psychiatric diagnoses for emotional center- ing, pain management, and support in recovery readiness. Children with cancer and their families practice First degree Reiki on themselves and one another. Reiki is a supportive therapy for hospice and palliative care.31
OVERVIEW OF REIKI IN CLINICAL PRACTICE
Although Reiki was first used in lay practice, it is increasing- ly used in a variety of medical settings including hospice care set- tings;26,31 emergency rooms;32 psychiatric settings;33operating rooms;29,34 nursing homes;35 pediatric,12 rehabilitation;35 and fami- ly practice centers, obstetrics, gynecology, and neonatal care units;36 HIV/AIDS;37,38 and organ transplantation care units;38 and for a variety of medical conditions such as cancer;39 pain;27,29,34 autism/special needs; infertility; neurodegenerative disorders; and fatigue syndromes. Reiki’s popularity among the lay population is evidenced by its mention in a wide variety of publications from the New York Times and Time, to Esquire and Town & Country.

A Review of Reiki
There are 3 tiers of Reiki practice: • Individuals who use Reiki for themselves, family, and
friends; • Licensed or unlicensed health care professionals either
offering full Reiki treatment or combining Reiki with other modalities (such as a massage therapist starting/ending treatment with a few minutes of Reiki, or a physician using Reiki to ease the discomfort of an examination);
• Hospital-affiliated and community-based programs offer- ing Reiki treatment or training.
Reiki appears to be an effective stress reduction technique that easily integrates into conventional medicine12 because it involves neither the use of substances nor manipulative touch that might be contraindicated or carry unknown risks, and because the protocol for Reiki treatment is flexible, adapting to both the need of the patient and of the medical circumstances. Reiki can be used to support conventional medical interventions.12,27,40 In addition, when used on a conscious patient, the experience is relaxing and pleasant, increasing patient comfort, enhancing relationships with caregivers, and possibly reducing side effects of procedures and medications. Staff report they enjoy giving Reiki treatments.12 Caregivers who routinely have to hurt patients in order administer needed medical care express gratitude for a tool that minimizes patient discomfort and quickly soothes distressed children. 29,36 There is limited but promising preliminary research evidence for Reiki’s use in pain management.
First degree practice is easily learned and can be used in self- treatment.26 Training patients to practice Reiki self-treatment may reduce the side effects of common medical interventions and empower patients with a simple, effective skill to address anxiety, insomnia, and pain26 at modest cost.41 A patient with resources to address his own suffering is better equipped to comply with con- ventional medical protocols and be a responsible partner to his medical caregivers.11
INTRODUCING REIKI INTO CLINICAL PROGRAMS AND HOSPITALS
Even in the absence of a large body of standardized research, clinicians and hospital administrators are including Reiki into patient care.12 With this in mind, we outline some of the challenges and issues that are being faced.42
There are 3 avenues through which Reiki is being incorporat- ed into conventional medical care:
• Medical personnel are learning First degree Reiki, using it for self-care, and integrating comforting touch into rou- tine medical care;
• Reiki practitioners are offering treatment to patients and staff;
• Hospital-based education programs are training patients, family members and caregivers in First degree Reiki.
It is a challenge to locate and identify Reiki practitioners who have the training, clinical experience, and professionalism neces-
sary to be part of a healthcare team.43,44 There is currently no licensing for Reiki, nor, given its diversity and apparent low-risk, is there likely to be.
The first step when bringing Reiki into clinical settings is the decision to offer treatment or training or both. A Reiki master is needed if Reiki training will be offered, and a traditionally trained Reiki master who has taken training over several years and has additional years of clinical experience is best equipped to set up or supervise a program. A First or Second degree practitioner who has adequate training and clinical experience, who values integra- tive medical collaboration, and who has references from medical practitioners is qualified to give treatment.
An otherwise qualified Reiki practitioner may need guidance on how to work in a medical rather than a private practice envi- ronment.45 Once expectations are communicated and agreed upon, there may be advantages to using non-medical Reiki practi- tioners rather than Reiki trained medical professionals when offering Reiki to patients. Integrative medicine calls for the incor- poration into medical settings of dedicated and experienced lay CAM practitioners even when their particular expertise lies out- side the conventional academic paradigm.16,46
There are no professional standards in the practice of Reiki and therefore certificates have little meaning. Discussion of the following questions can be useful when evaluating a practitioner’s expertise and appropriateness for collaboration in a medical setting:
1. When did you complete each level of training and how many hours of training did you receive at each level?
2. Do you practice daily self-treatment? 3. What clinical experience have you had since your training? 4. How do you describe Reiki? 5. How would you respond to questions about the meaning
of various sensations a recipient might have during or
after treatment? 6. How do you feel during and after giving treatment? 7. What role do you see yourself playing as part of an inter-
disciplinary healthcare team? The standard of care should be followed for any patient who
is receiving Reiki therapy in a clinical setting, including close monitoring of medications. Individuals with diabetes, in particu- lar, have been reported to require less medication once beginning treatment. Outpatients with HIV/AIDS have been able to reduce psychiatric medications under medical supervision when using Reiki self-treatment. It is of interest that people with HIV/AIDS also report greater openness to availing themselves of the benefits of conventional pharmaceutical treatment and increased ease of compliance after using Reiki self-treatment.47
STATE OF THE RESEARCH LITERATURE ON REIKI
The preponderance of Reiki studies reported in the literature to date consists of a limited number of case reports, descriptive studies, or randomized controlled studies conducted with a small number of patients. This is in keeping with much of the current

research on complementary therapies. For example, Ke and col- leagues reviewed CAM studies from 11 American Medical Association journals, and found that one third of the studies were traditional or narrative reviews and one fifth were randomized, controlled trials.48 Although few of the published studies of Reiki are randomized controlled trials, it is important to review this lit- erature in order to understand the context of current practice pat- terns of Reiki and to plan future research from health services research to randomized controlled trials. Because of parallels between Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, and distant healing such as intercessory prayer, these modalities have sometimes been stud- ied together, further confounding the ability to evaluate the sepa- rate effects of these therapies. Relevant randomized, placebo-controlled studies looking at Reiki in combination with these other forms of energy healing will be included here (Table 2).
Randomized controlled studies of Reiki and other energy healing and distance therapies
Astin and colleagues undertook a systematic review of ran- domized trials of any form of “distant healing,” defined as “strate- gies that purport to heal through some exchange or channeling of supraphysical energy.”49 This review included randomized place- bo-controlled studies of Reiki, and it is worth reviewing selected findings. Through an electronic review of MEDLINE, PsychLIT, EMBASE, CISCOM, and Cochrane Library databases, the researchers identified 23 trials involving 2774 patients. Only stud- ies that included random assignment and placebo or other con- trol were included in the analysis. Studies were also limited to those published in peer-reviewed journals and which were clini- cal, rather than experimental in nature.
Astin et al identified over 100 clinical trials of distant heal- ing, with 23 meeting the criteria outlined above. These studies were broken down into 3 subcategories: distant healing including Reiki, prayer, and Therapeutic Touch. Each study was evaluated for methodological quality using Jadad’s guidelines on method of randomization, description and method of placebo-control, and description of withdrawals and dropouts.50 Each study was also evaluated as to whether or not it was adequately powered and whether randomization was successful. The effect size for other distant healing which included Reiki was 0.38, (P=0.073), for prayer the effect size was 0.25 (P=0.009) and for Therapeutic Touch the effect size was 0.63 (P=0.003). Effect sizes were also cal- culated for the 16 studies in which both patient and evaluator were blinded, which yielded an effect size (0.40, P

El Centro de Medicina Alternativa y Complementaria de los Institutos Nacionales de la Salud (CNMAC) ha clasificado las terapias de medicina energética en dos categorías principales: las terapias de biocampo y las terapias bioelectromagnéticas. Según las clasificaciones del CNMAC, las modalidades biocampo son aquellas terapias cuyo objetivo es influir en los campos energéticos que supuestamente rodean e interpenetran al cuerpo humano. Estas terapias, que incluyen el Reiki, Qigong y Toque Terapéutico, suponen el toque o la colocación de las manos en, o a través de, los biocampos, cuya existencia aún no se ha probado científicamente.

LOS SISTEMAS TRADICIONALES DE MEDICINA Y EL REIKI

Las tradiciones indígenas de China, Tíbet, África, Rusia, América Nativa, y la India (Ayurveda) son conocidas en el mundo occidental. En Europa, el hombre de la Edad de Hielo, que pereció hace 5 300 años en los Alpes suizos y que fue recientemente descubierto congelado en un glaciar, tenía parásitos en sus intestinos. Llevaba una pequeña bolsa de medicina y se cree que se automedicaba con hongos locales. Si esto es cierto, es evidente que el hombre de la Edad de Hielo tenía acceso a información médica por medios no-científicos.
Aunque se sabe que algunos sistemas de medicina indígena y tradicional han utilizado tecnologías médicas avanzadas, como la neurocirugía en la India y en África, estos sistemas a menudo resaltan el desarrollo de habilidades en ciertas áreas ignoradas por la medicina convencional. Por ejemplo, los curanderos tradicionales usan remedios obtenidos del entorno natural y se enfocan en acceder al campo vibracional sutil que se supone relacionado con la conciencia. Se considera necesario intervenir en el campo vibracional para obtener un beneficio prolongado. HISTORIA
Mikao Usui (1865-1926), practicante de toda la vida del Budismo Tendai y aspirante espiritual entregado, formuló las bases de lo que se ha llamado Reiki en el Japón de principios del siglo XX. Se educó desde niño en un monasterio y practicó artes marciales desde los 12 años, logrando la maestría de varias disciplinas. Es posible que debido a la trayectoria budista de Usui, se suela hacer referencia al Reiki como una antigua técnica tibetana, aunque no existan pruebas de que esto sea cierto. Mikao Usui se refería claramente a sí mismo como fundador del Reiki, y la medicina tibetana no incluye la sanación energética a través de la imposición de manos.
Aquellos que se acercaban a Usui para que los sanara, recibían varios minutos de toque suave curativo antes de ser instruidos en su método de autodesarrollo espiritual. En el último año de vida del Maestro Usui se le acercó un estudiante, Chujiro Hayashi (1878 -1940), un Oficial Naval retirado, con una propuesta para desarrollar los aspectos terapéuticos del sistema despojado de las rigurosas prácticas meditativas. Usui lo aprobó. Cuando Usui murió, Hayashi siguió desarrollando el sistema como una técnica de sanación práctica sin el percibido bagaje de las prácticas espirituales. Llamó a su técnica “Hayashi Shiki Reiki” y aunque alguna vez Usui usó la palabra, es probable que a partir de Hayashi el sistema empezara a llamarse Reiki. Rei significa universal o superior y Ki significa energía vital, como el chi de la medicina china. (Es importante señalar que la vibración a la que se accede en el Reiki surge del Chi primordial no-dual, o Tao, que se diferencia del nivel bioenergético del Chi estimulado por la terapia de acupuntura).

Hayashi abrió una pequeña clínica con 8 camillas en Tokio, donde dieciséis practicantes realizaban tratamientos de Reiki en parejas. En algún momento, Hayashi se apartó del enfoque típicamente budista de Usui donde las enseñanzas y la sanación estaban disponibles a un bajo costo monetario, ya que la gente se comprometía más cuando pagaba honorarios por su sanación. La señora Hawayo Takata (1900-1980), de la primera generación de japoneses estadounidenses, llegó a la clínica de Hayashi en 1936 sufriendo dolencias abdominales y respiratorias. Después de haber recibido tratamiento durante cuatro meses y habiendo recuperado a su salud, se convirtió en alumna de Hayashi y practicó en su clínica. Takata regresó a su casa en Hawai en 1937, llevando con ella la instrucción de Hayashi de difundir el Reiki en Occidente. Hayashi visitó Hawai en 1938, dio clases y seminarios, y la entrenó a Takata para ser Maestra de Reiki. Hayashi firmó un certificado el 21 de febrero 1938 confirmando que Takata era Maestra totalmente acreditada de Reiki, la única persona fuera del Japón con esas credenciales en ese momento, y la primera mujer. Hayashi comprendió profundamente que Usui quería que las enseñanzas fueran ampliamente accesibles, y se atrevió a superar la tradición cultural que habría restringido la práctica a los hombres japoneses.
Ante el desafío de estructurar una técnica de curación japonesa a una población mayoritariamente cristiana en el contexto socio-político que precedió a la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Takata reformuló los orígenes del Reiki de forma pragmática, y presentó a Usui como un ministro cristiano. Sin embargo, no cambió la práctica que Hayashi había enseñado, enfatizando la importancia de un auto-tratamiento sistemático como base. Takata enseñó y compartió el Reiki durante muchos años en Hawai. En 1973 fue invitada al continente, donde enseñó durante los últimos siete años de su vida. Takata murió en diciembre de 1980, después de haber iniciado a 22 maestros de Reiki (Usui y Hayashi instruyeron aproximadamente 18 cada uno).
En menos de 15 años después de su muerte, el Reiki se había extendido por todo el mundo y regresó a Japón, aunque rara vez según las pautas que ella había enseñado. A mediados de 1990, varios Maestros de Reiki occidentales descubrieron un pequeño grupo de estudiantes que habían sido capacitados inicialmente o por Usui o por Hayashi.
Uno de estos estudiantes aclaró la diferencia entre la sanación vibracional y la sanación bioenergética de la siguiente manera: “El Sensei Usui [nos] dijo que [el] método es una técnica de sanación espiritual y una técnica de sanación energética. La curación espiritual trae sanación fundamental sustancial ayudándonos a formar parte de la conciencia universal, mientras que la curación energética se centra en la eliminación de los síntomas de los desórdenes de la mente y del cuerpo.” Los practicantes avanzados en terapias bioenergéticas, incluido el Reiki, conciben el biocampo como una continuidad desde lo vibracional, en el nivel más profundo y sutil, hasta la bioenergética, más cercana la esfera física. Si bien esta distinción no ha sido comprobada científicamente, es importante dentro del sistema de sanación del Reiki y esencial para la teoría sobre la que se basa el Reiki, como se verá a continuación. El término Reiki se refiere tanto al sistema de curación como a la vibración a las que se tiene acceso.
Casi todos los practicantes de Reiki fuera del Japón en la actualidad remontan su linaje a los 22 maestros capacitados por Takata. También hay dos otros profesores, Hiroshi Doi y Premaratna, que ofrecen prácticas disciplinadas originadas en Usui y Hayashi. En este artículo, el término Reiki se utiliza para referirse a la técnica tradicional como enseñada por Takata, a menos que se especifique lo contrario. De acuerdo con la filosofía de las prácticas espirituales de Asia en la cual el profesional es siempre visto como un estudiante del sistema, y un "maestro" debidamente se considera a sí mismo como un "maestro estudiante", utilizaremos los términos "practicante" y " estudiante" de manera intercambiable.
TRATAMIENTO TRADICIONAL DE REIKI
El tratamiento de Reiki por imposición de manos se ofrece a través de un toque suave a un receptor completamente vestido, sentado en una silla o recostado en una mesa de tratamiento. Un lugar tranquilo propicio para la relajación es aconsejable, pero no necesario. Un tratamiento completo normalmente incluye la colocación de las manos en 12 posiciones en la cabeza, y en las partes frontal y posterior del torso. Las manos también pueden colocarse directamente en el sitio de la herida o del dolor si se desea, pero la técnica no es específica ni para los síntomas ni para la patología. Cuando está contraindicado incluso el toque suave, por ejemplo en la presencia de lesiones, las manos pueden flotar sobre el cuerpo a una distancia de algunas pulgadas. Si bien se puede acortar o alargar una sesión según las necesidades, los tratamientos completos habituales duran entre 45 y 75 minutos. No es necesario que el receptor esté consciente y se puede aplicar Reiki durante la cirugía. La práctica del Reiki es principalmente pasiva, incorporando así la filosofía asiática de la no-acción. Ofrecer Reiki es tan reconfortante para el practicante como para el receptor. Los practicantes creen que el Reiki tiene la capacidad de reequilibrar el biocampo en el nivel vibracional más profundo, eliminando así las causas sutiles de la enfermedad y al mismo tiempo mejorando la resistencia general. Como el Reiki es una modalidad holística que favorece la curación general y el bienestar a todos los niveles, es imposible predecir cuánto tardan en remitir los síntomas específicos. En general, cuando se abordan enfermedades crónicas, se recomienda un mínimo de 4 tratamientos completos antes de evaluar los beneficios clínicos.
FORMACIÓN EN REIKI
El Reiki se practica en un primer nivel, segundo nivel y a nivel de maestría, y cada nivel tiene un ámbito de práctica definido. En el centro de la formación, y exclusivas de esta práctica, existen una serie de iniciaciones, también llamadas habilitaciones o sintonizaciones que se cree que conectan al estudiante con la conciencia primordial, la inteligencia que impregna a la creación, manteniendo funciones que sostienen a la vida y dirigiendo procesos celulares complejos, y que es la fuente de las vibraciones sutiles de Reiki.
Se cree que esta conexión está disponible en cualquier momento, sin tener en cuenta la salud, estado mental o intención del estudiante. Se estima que el auto-tratamiento es la práctica fundamental para todos los niveles. El Reiki se considera como auto-revelador, y a los estudiantes no se les enseña el Reiki, sino que se les enseña cómo aprender Reiki. La iniciación en cada nivel representa el comienzo del estudio en ese nivel y no la culminación de su aprendizaje.
El primer nivel de Reiki es fácil de aprender y adecuado para los estudiantes de cualquiera edad o estado de salud que sientan el deseo de practicarlo. Los estudiantes de primer nivel están capacitados para tratarse a sí mismos y a los demás utilizando el toque suave no-manipulador para provocar una cascada de vibración curativa. La eficacia del tratamiento y la capacidad del receptor de percibir la energía parecen no estar relacionados. Es aconsejable practicar un mínimo de 3 meses antes proceder al segundo nivel.
A los practicantes de segundo nivel se les enseña el uso de símbolos específicos para acceder mentalmente al Reiki en la curación a distancia. El aprendizaje del primer y segundo nivel requiere entre 8 y 12 horas de clase cada uno y suelen ser enseñados de manera grupal, aunque la instrucción privada también puede organizarse previo acuerdo. Hay cuatro iniciaciones de primer nivel, y una iniciación en cada uno de los niveles restantes.
El Reiki se desarrolla en todos los niveles a través de la práctica comprometida. No es necesario ni recomendable tener iniciaciones más elevadas para mejorar su práctica. El motivo para estudiar otro nivel debe ser adquirir esa habilidad en particular: curación a distancia en el segundo nivel, o la enseñanza e iniciación en el nivel de Maestría. Sea cual fuere el nivel, los estudiantes sólo pueden avanzar a través de un auto-tratamiento diligente. De esta manera, los Maestros de Reiki no dominan el Reiki, sino que son simplemente estudiantes que se sienten llamados a enseñar, y que continúan aprendiendo a través de la enseñanza. La verdadera maestría, en el sentido de Usui, Hayashi, y Takata no es cuestión de recibir una iniciación, sino más bien de una vida dedicada a la práctica.
Una práctica de entre 3 y 10 años de Reiki constituye un fundamento razonable para la enseñanza. La formación en el nivel de Maestro es un aprendizaje de al menos un año. Cuando se enseña en cualquier nivel, es responsabilidad del maestro de Reiki considerar cualquier circunstancia excepcional y utilizar su discreción en la personalización del aprendizaje para adaptar el Reiki al individuo. El Reiki se aprende por transmisión directa de un maestro de Reiki y no de un libro. Ninguno de los niveles tradicionales de Reiki incluye práctica ni en el tratamiento profesional ni en la dinámica de la relación terapéutica.
El entrenamiento descrito anteriormente es el ideal basado en Takata. Sin embargo, desde su muerte en 1980, muchos estudiantes de Reiki no han recibido una formación tan minuciosa. Hoy en día, es común que los nuevos estudiantes reciban una formación de menos de un fin de semana y salgan con la impresión equivocada de que son maestros de Reiki. Sólo se puede crecer en la maestría a través de años de práctica disciplinada.
Aunque existan varias organizaciones profesionales de maestros de Reiki, la Alianza de Reiki adhiere de forma más consistente al modelo de Takata. Cuenta con más de 700 miembros en 45 países que hacen honor a un código de ética que incluye el respeto de la relación médico-paciente. También hay maestros de Reiki no afiliados a la Alianza de Reiki que se han comprometido con una práctica ética y la formación e iniciación integral de nuevos estudiantes.
Es importante señalar que no hay ningún certificado que transmita información confiable sobre la calidad de la capacitación en Reiki. Por eso, es útil tener en cuenta varios factores cuando consideremos las credenciales de un practicante, tales como la constancia del auto-tratamiento, la experiencia de la práctica clínica, y la duración de la formación en los distintos niveles. Estas cuestiones se abordan en otras secciones de este artículo.
TEORÍA DEL REIKI
No hay una teoría aceptada en forma unánime sobre cómo debería funcionar el Reiki, y su mecanismo de acción aún se desconoce. Por esta razón, el Reiki está sujeto a las mismas críticas dirigidas a otras modalidades de MAC por parte de los escépticos: no puede ser eficaz porque carece de un mecanismo biológico de acción conocido. Como ha argumentado David Hufford, en este punto de vista está implícita la creencia de que las afirmaciones del MAC se acreditarán de ser 'verdaderas' o 'falsas' a partir de los conocimientos científicos actuales, y que "la aceptación de cualquier reclamo teóricamente no-plausible exigiría el abandono del conocimiento científico actual." Naturalmente esto acaba con toda investigación antes de que comience, sin dejar espacio para descubrir las conexiones entre las teorías que subyacen a las prácticas de sanación energética como el Reiki, el Toque Terapéutico o el Qi Gong, así como aquellas que están surgiendo en las diversas ramas de las ciencias convencionales
Los conceptos que subyacen a las terapias energéticas como el Reiki tienen supuestos teóricos comunes con una variedad de modelos en la física; ninguno de estos ha sido vinculado de manera experimental con la medicina o con los resultados clínicos. Los modelos del bioelectromagnetismo, la física cuántica, y la teoría de las súper cuerdas son coherentes con las escrituras asiáticas al sugerir que la vibración muy sutil puede ser el sustrato de la realidad tal y como la conocemos, y por lo tanto es posible que dichas vibraciones tengan un papel importante en la salud y la enfermedad. Por ejemplo, en el ámbito del bioelectromagnetismo, Jan Walleczek y Abe Liboff ofrecen credibilidad científica al papel potencial de las fuerzas de los campos bioelectromagnéticos sutiles en los procesos fisiológicos. Walleczek en particular, ha demostrado de forma convincente que los campos magnéticos sutiles pueden tener interacciones medibles con sistemas biológicos en el área del potencial redox y las reacciones de hidroxilación. Aunque esta área de investigación se encuentra en sus primeras etapas, estas conexiones sugieren que los fundamentos teóricos del Reiki y de otras terapias energéticas pueden no estar en contradicción directa con los modelos científicos.
La vibración de Reiki parece ser canalizada a través del practicante según las necesidades del receptor y dentro de la capacidad del profesional para llevar la vibración. A menudo, a los estudiantes principiantes les resulta difícil comprender que el no-hacer pueda ser tan eficaz.
Se cree que el flujo del Reiki va aumentando a medida que el profesional está más tranquilo interiormente, una comprensión adquirida sólo a través de la práctica prolongada. El hecho de que el flujo vibracional sea canalizado por el receptor permite que haya una gran flexibilidad y facilidad de entrega. Mientras la capacidad del profesional para conducir las vibraciones puede variar, no existe ninguna técnica equivocada. El mecanismo autorregulador del Reiki elimina la posibilidad de una "sobredosis", al igual que una esponja seca sólo absorbe hasta el punto de saturación. Los practicantes experimentados afirman que pueden ver cuando disminuye el flujo vibracional de sanación, en ese momento pasan a la siguiente posición de manos. A menudo los receptores perciben un flujo vibracional, a veces es una sensación de calor o frío, u ondas de relajación a través de su cuerpo o en áreas específicas que pueden corresponder o no al lugar donde las manos del profesional estén ubicadas. Tales experiencias pueden ser evidencia de un efecto de arrastre sutil, similar al de la curación por sonido, por el cual las vibraciones de Reiki sintonizan el biocampo del receptor con una mayor armonía.
Se cree que el Reiki reequilibra el biocampo, lo cual fortalece la capacidad curativa del cuerpo y aumenta la resistencia sistémica al estrés. Parece que reduce el estrés y estimula la auto-curación con la relajación y quizás con un reajuste del tono de reposo del sistema nervioso autónomo. Los defensores del Reiki creen que esto podría conducir a una mejora del funcionamiento del sistema inmunitario y al aumento de la producción de endorfinas.
Programas que incorporan Reiki en los tratamientos médicos
La tabla 1 resume los programas que incorporan Reiki en el ámbito clínico. La mayoría de estos programas no han sido sometidos a una evaluación sistemática debido a restricciones de presupuesto y tiempo. Sin embargo, el personal, los pacientes, y los administradores del programa informan sobre una gran cantidad de beneficios como reducción de la ansiedad y disminución del uso de analgésicos, aumento de la satisfacción en pacientes quirúrgicos, y reducción del número de quejas gerontológicas comunes, como ansiedad, soledad, insomnio y dolor, entre individuos mayores que viven en la comunidad. El Reiki puede adaptarse fácilmente al modelo de reducción de daño y puede usarse con éxito en el autotratamiento combinado con el cuidado médico-psiquiátrico adecuado en personas con diagnóstico combinado de VIH y psiquiátrico para lograr el equilibrio emocional, el manejo del dolor y el apoyo en la preparación para la recuperación. Los niños con cáncer y sus familias practican el Reiki de primer grado sobre sí mismos y los unos sobre los otros. El Reiki es una terapia de apoyo para cuidados paliativos y hospitalarios.
VISIÓN GENERAL DEL REIKI EN LA PRÁCTICA CLÍNICA
Si bien el Reiki era una práctica laica en un principio, en la actualidad se lo utiliza cada vez más en diversos entornos médicos que abarcan lugares de atención hospitalaria, salas de emergencia, ámbitos psiquiátricos, salas de operaciones, hogares de ancianos, pediatría, rehabilitación, y centros de medicina clínica, unidades de obstetricia, ginecología y atención neonatal, VIH/SIDA, unidades de cuidado intensivo para el transplante de órganos; y para una gran variedad de enfermedades como el cáncer; el dolor; el autismo y las necesidades especiales, la infertilidad, los trastornos neurodegenerativos y los síndromes de fatiga crónica.
Una amplia variedad de publicaciones del New York Times, Esquire, y de Town & Country mencionan el Reiki. Esto demuestra la aceptación de la disciplina entre la población laica.

Existen tres estratos de práctica del Reiki:
• Las personas que usan Reiki para sí mismos, su familia y amigos;
• Profesionales de la salud con o sin licencia que ofrecen tratamiento completo de Reiki o una combinación de Reiki con otras modalidades (por ejemplo, un terapeuta de masaje que inicia o termina el tratamiento con unos minutos de Reiki, o un médico que usa el Reiki para aliviar la molestia de un examen);
• Programas comunitarios y afiliados a hospitales que ofrecen tratamiento o formación de Reiki.
Parece que el Reiki es una técnica eficaz de reducción del estrés que se integra fácilmente en la medicina convencional ya que no implica el uso de sustancias ni ningún toque manipulador que pueda estar contraindicado o que pueda reportar riesgos desconocidos, y además porque el protocolo del tratamiento de Reiki es flexible, se adapta tanto a las necesidades del paciente como a las circunstancias médicas. El Reiki puede utilizarse como apoyo a intervenciones médicas convencionales.
Además, cuando se usa con un paciente consciente, la experiencia es relajante y agradable, lo cual aumenta la comodidad del paciente, refuerza las relaciones con los cuidadores y reduce posiblemente los efectos secundarios de los procedimientos y la medicación. El personal dice que disfruta cuando da tratamientos de Reiki. Los cuidadores que habitualmente tienen que dañar a los pacientes para administrarles el cuidado médico necesario, expresan su gratitud por tener una herramienta que minimiza el malestar del paciente y alivia rápidamente a los niños angustiados. Existen pruebas limitadas pero prometedoras en investigaciones preliminares sobre el uso del Reiki en el tratamiento del dolor.
La práctica del primer nivel se aprende con facilidad y puede utilizarse en el auto-tratamiento. La formación de pacientes para la práctica del auto-tratamiento del Reiki puede reducir los efectos secundarios de las intervenciones médicas comunes, así como otorgar poder a los pacientes con una técnica sencilla y eficaz para tratar la ansiedad, el insomnio y el dolor a un bajo costo. Un paciente con recursos para tratar su propio sufrimiento está mejor equipado para cumplir con los protocolos médicos convencionales y ser un colaborador responsable para con su cuidadores médicos.
INTRODUCCIÓN DEL REIKI EN PROGRAMAS CLÍNICOS Y HOSPITALES Incluso aunque no contamos con un gran corpus de investigación estandardizada, los clínicos y administradores de hospitales están incluyendo el Reiki en el cuidado del paciente. Teniendo esto en cuenta, exponemos aquí algunos de los desafíos y problemáticas que se están enfrentando.
Existen 3 vías a través de las cuales el Reiki está siendo incorporado al cuidado médico convencional:
El personal médico está aprendiendo el Reiki de primer nivel, usándolo para el auto-cuidado e integrando este toque reconfortante en el cuidado médico rutinario;
Los practicantes de Reiki están ofreciendo tratamiento a pacientes y personal;
Programas de educación realizados en hospitales están enseñando el primer nivel de Reiki a pacientes, cuidadores, y familiares.
Localizar e identificar a los practicantes de Reiki que tengan la formación, experiencia clínica y profesionalismo necesarios para ser parte de un equipo de asistencia sanitaria supone un desafío. En este momento no existen licencias para practicar el Reiki, ni parece que vaya a ser posible en un futuro debido a la diversidad y el aparente bajo riesgo de su utilización.
El primer paso para llevar el Reiki al entorno clínico es decidir si se ofrecerá tratamiento, formación, o ambos. Si se ofrece formación, se necesitará un maestro de Reiki, además un maestro de Reiki capacitado según la manera tradicional, que haya sido entrenado durante varios años y que tenga años adicionales de experiencia clínica, está mejor equipado para establecer o supervisar un programa. Un practicante de primer o segundo nivel con formación adecuada y experiencia clínica, que valore la colaboración médica integral, y que tenga referencias de practicantes médicos, está mejor calificado para ofrecer tratamiento.
Un practicante preparado de otra manera necesitará orientación sobre como trabajar en el entorno médico en lugar del privado. Cuando las expectativas se han comunicado y acordado, pueden existir algunas ventajas en el ofrecimiento de Reiki a los pacientes si se usa un practicante de Reiki no-médico en vez de un profesional médico entrenado en Reiki. La medicina integral pide que se incorpore al entorno sanitario practicantes laicos de MAC, que sean dedicados y experimentados, incluso cuando su experiencia provenga de afuera del paradigma académico tradicional.
No hay estándares profesionales en la práctica del Reiki y, por lo tanto, los certificados tienen poco valor. Cuando evaluamos la experiencia de un practicante de Reiki y su aptitud para colaborar en un entorno médico, es útil analizar las siguientes preguntas:
¿Cuándo completó cada nivel de formación y cuántas horas de práctica realizó en cada nivel?
¿Práctica el auto-tratamiento en forma diaria?
¿Qué experiencia clínica ha tenido desde su formación?
¿Cómo describiría el Reiki?
¿Cómo respondería a las preguntas sobre el significado de las diversas sensaciones que un receptor de Reiki podría tener durante o después del tratamiento?
¿Cómo se siente durante y después de ofrecer tratamiento?
¿Qué rol se ve desempeñando dentro de un equipo multidisciplinario de atención médica?
Deben cumplirse las normas de atención médica para cualquier paciente que recibe terapia de Reiki en el entorno clínico, incluso un control preciso de la medicación. Se ha informado que en especial los individuos con diabetes necesitan menos medicación una vez iniciado el tratamiento. Los pacientes externos con VIH/SIDA han podido reducir la medicación psiquiátrica bajo supervisión médica cuando realizan el auto-tratamiento de Reiki. Es de gran interés saber que personas con VIH/SIDA muestran una mayor predisposición para aprovechar los beneficios del tratamiento farmacéutico convencional y una mayor conformidad después de utilizar el auto-tratamiento de Reiki.
ESTADO DE LAS PUBLICACIONES DE INVESTIGACIÓN SOBRE EL REIKI
En la actualidad, la mayoría de los estudios de Reiki que predominan consiste de una limitada cantidad de informes de casos, estudios descriptivos y estudios aleatorios controlados realizados con un pequeño número de pacientes. Esto está de acuerdo con gran parte de la investigación actual sobre terapias complementarias. Aunque una mínima parte de los estudios publicados sobre el Reiki son estudios aleatorios controlados, es importante revisar esta bibliografía para comprender el contexto de los modelos actuales de práctica de Reiki y para planificar investigaciones futuras por parte de los servicios de salud que realizan estudios aleatorios controlados. Debido al paralelismo entre el Reiki, el Toque Terapéutico, y la curación a distancia como la oración intercesora, estas modalidades han sido a veces estudiadas juntas, confundiendo aún más la capacidad de evaluar y separar los efectos de estas terapias. Estudios aleatorios controlados del Reiki de y otras terapias de curación por energía y a distancia
Astin y sus colegas emprendieron una revisión sistemática de los ensayos aleatorios de toda forma de “curación a distancia”, definidos como “estrategias con el propósito de curar por medio de algún intercambio o canalización de energía suprafísica”. Esta revisión incluyó estudios aleatorios controlados con placebo del Reiki, y vale la pena revisar algunas de las conclusiones. A través de una revisión electrónica de las bases de datos de MEDLINE, PsychLIT, EMBASE, CISCOM, y de la biblioteca Cochrane, los investigadores encontraron 23 ensayos con 2 774 pacientes. Sólo se analizaron los estudios realizados por asignación aleatoria y con placebo, o con algún otro control. Los estudios también fueron limitados a aquellos publicados en publicaciones revisadas por pares profesionales y de naturaleza clínica más que experimental.
Astin y sus colaboradores identificaron más de 100 ensayos clínicos de curación a distancia, 23 de los cuales cumplían los criterios esbozados anteriormente. Estos estudios fueron divididos en tres subcategorías: curación a distancia que incluye Reiki, oración, y Toque Terapéutico. Se hizo uso de las directrices de Jadad sobre el método de aleatorización y descripción, y el método del control con placebo, así como una descripción de los casos de retiros y abandonos, para evaluar cada estudio por su calidad metodológica.
También se evaluó cada estudio para ver si tenía suficiente poder estadístico y si se había logrado la aleatorización. La magnitud del efecto de otras formas de sanación a distancia que incluían Reiki eran de 0.38 (P=0.073), el de la oración era de 0.25 (P=0.009) y el del Toque Terapéutico era de 0.63 (P=0.003). I was born in Argentina, grew up in Sydney, Australia, and studied French language in Geneva, Switzerland as well as Spanish and Catalan Barcelona, Spain.
Currently I am based in Paris and work freelance, translating and editing documents such as manuals for Columbia University’s Earth Institute, scientific research papers, and training materials in English, Spanish and French. I also revise articles, interviews, project proposals, and am editing a book of 100 interviews about the conservation of the Amazon Rainforest for the UN International Year of Forests 2011.
