German to English: Albrechtsburg Meissen General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: History
Translation - English Albrechtsburg Meissen
Because of its location high above the Elbe, the Albrechtsburg in → Meissen, also called “Saxony’s Acropolis”, was, as the earliest castle in Germany, the starting point of Saxon history, and for 154 years, from 1710 to 1864, home to the →Meissen Manufactory®, the first porcelain manufactory in Europe.
The earliest history of the castle dates back to the year 929, when King Heinrich 1st (876-936) destroyed the Sorbian castle "Gana", and in order to control the countryside, found a suitable site on a steep cliff between the Elbe, Triebish and Meisa rivers, on which to build his castle.
From 968 a Margrave of Meissen was testified and in the same year, the Castle Hill became the Bishop’s seat for the pastors of the new diocese of Meissen. In 1089, on command of the Emperor, a representative of the House of Wettin was appointed, for the first time, to the office of Margrave, which, since 1125, had been hereditary among the Wettins.
This made the Saxon-Thuringia area into a powerful domain, which under Friedrich IV. the Pugnacious (1370-1428), who was appointed Elector of Saxony in 1423, reached the highpoint of power expansion.
