Вы, наверное, замечали, что взгляд в глаза иногда вызывает легкую неловкость между людьми? Срабатывает механизм оценки и самооценки. Человек чувствует, что его оценивают — и оценивают прямо в эту самую секунду, да еще и так неопосредованно эта оценка происходит! И он не выдерживает этой ситуации, этого психологического напряжения и отводит взор.
Этот страх прямого взгляда изначально имеет биологическую природу. В животном мире взгляд имел два значения. Первое — это агрессию и вызов, например, два самца, меряющие взглядом взаимную силу, свой взаимный ранг. И, второе, сексуальное привлечение: самец и самка, когда взгляд выполнял предварительную и отборочную для сексуальных игр функцию. У человека эти значения, агрессия и привлечение, тоже сохранились, но, в связи с более тонкой организацией душевного мира, добавилось еще много оттенков и полутонов.
Для внимательного человека глаза его собеседника многое могут сказать. Если собеседник взор прячет, это также выдает его неуверенность перед людьми и страх перед ситуацией, поскольку это фактически вариант ухода, убегания от внимания других людей. Пряча взор, вы, сами того не желая, сообщаете другим, что вам некомфортно смотреть в глаза людей. И это опять будет трактоваться как ваша слабость и неуверенность. Взгляд хоть и в глаза — но суетливый и бегающий создаст впечатление, что вы не можете долго спокойно выдерживать взоры другого и также портит мнение о вас.
Translation - English Eye Contact
You have probably noticed that establishing eye-contact can sometimes be a little bit awkward. A process of surveillance and self-evaluation comes into play. A person feels that they are being assessed but in the same instant they themselves are conducting an assessment, and it happens in such an uncontrolled way! But if a person cannot endure such a state of psychological tension, then they avert their gaze.
This fear of direct eye contact has a biological origin. In the animal world, eye-contact had two meanings. The first was to show aggression or to challenge. For example, two males use eye-contact to measure each other’s strength and status. The second was to attract the opposite sex: a male and female used it for preliminary assessment and to carry out functions of selection or exclusion before sexual flirtation. For a person, these meanings of aggression and attraction are still relevant for a person but in their complex emotional world, subtler shades and colours are added.
For an attentive person, much can be deduced from the eyes during a conversation. If somebody averts their gaze, this is in effect a kind of retreat and an attempt to escape observation so it shows that they face uncertainty in front of other people and it reveals that they have a fear of situations. By looking away, you unintentionally inform others that you are not comfortable looking them in the eye and this will be interpreted as weakness and uncertainty on your part. However, looking somebody in the eye but in a way which is unsettled or fidgety will create an impression that you cannot maintain someone’s eye-contact for a long time and it will lower their opinion of you.

I have also translated for Firefly, a joint venture of the Moscow office of KPMG and the United States Agency for International Development. With regard to my education, I have completed the Principles and Practice of Translation Postgraduate Certificate at City University, London. The practical coursework, which consisted of translations from Russian to English, came mainly from the fields of Literature and Social Science, also touching on Law and Science.
