Source text - English Talk about a deal. French authorities are selling an entire village, Courbefy, at an all-inclusive price of about $440,000 (€330,000), according to Reuters.
Judicial officials in neighboring Limoges are selling the ghost town, which is located in the central region of France, and giving bidders until Friday to submit offers. The package includes the village, tennis courts, a swimming pool and 19 buildings. A bidder has yet to come forward, reports say.
According to a court ruling, if there are no buyers by Friday’s deadline, the town will fall into the hands of Credit Agricole bank. “We couldn’t buy Courbefy back because it’s too big an investment for us,” said Bernard Guilhem, mayor of the surrounding area, Saint-Nicolas-Courbefy. “This totally abandoned village breaks our hearts and we hope Credit Agricole will arrange something there again,” he told.
The village was once home to a thriving community, but saw a downturn in the 1970s, when farming in the region declined. The overgrown and barren town is studded with history, including a 13th century church and remains of a castle; the area is described as home to “thieves, ravers and squatters,” one local told the Le Figaro newspaper.
Despite an attempt to revive the village as a holiday destination in the 1990s, Courbefy’s last resident left in 2008.

Les fonctionnaires judiciaires dans le voisinage de Limoges vendent une ville fantôme, situé dans la région centrale de la France, laissant aux enrichisseurs jusqu’à Vendredi pour proposer une offre. Le tout inclus le village, des courts de tennis, une piscine et 19 bâtiments. Un acheteur potentiel s’est déjà présenté d’après certaines informations.
Selon la décision du tribunal, s’il n’y a aucun acheteur jusqu’à Vendredi, la ville tombera dans les mains de la banque du Crédit Agricole. « Nous ne pourrions racheter Courbefy car elle représente un trop investissement pour nous » dit Bernard Guilhem, maire de la ville alentour, Saint-Nicolas-Courbefy. « Ce village totalement abandonné a brisé nos cœurs et nous espérons que le Crédit Agricole pourra faire quelque chose » dit-il.
Le village fût à une époque le foyer d’une communauté prospère, mais a connu un ralentissement économique dans les années 1970, quand les fermes dans la région déclinèrent. Cette ville envahie et stérile est emprunte d’histoire, dont une église du 13ème siècle et des vestiges d’un château ; le domaine est décris comme la maison de « voleurs, fêtards et squatters », comme l’a confessé un habitant local dans le journal Le Figaro.
Malgré une tentative pour faire revivre le village en tant que destination de vacances dans les années 1990, le dernier résident de Courbefy est parti en 2008.
