I came to America through a university exchange program five years ago. During my time here I completed my Bachelor's Degree in Marketing and Management and started my Master's program in Public Relations at Montana State University Billings. When I first came from China my English was good enough to carry a conversation but not so much to be completely fluent. In order to improve my language proficiency and working experience I decided to do get involved on campus and in the community and work as an intern as much as I can. There are school regulations toward international students working in the US. As a business major I was able to tie my internship experiences to my class work and gain credits toward my double major. I was lucky enough to find great opportunities to work as a general intern at a local bank the first year I was here; then I had something to put on my resume and opportunities just kept coming. I worked as an office manager at a local car dealership for a summer and a marketing intern for our on campus Career Service Office. Eventually I was recommended by one of my favorite professors to work in our on campus International Studies Office (ISO). It's been almost three years since I started working with ISO. I've learned so much working with international and domestic students, other departments on campus, and guests from other countries. Translating for Chinese students is a daily responsibility for me aside from creating marketing and promotional materials, student services, and recruiting international students and agents. Sometimes we will receive translation requests from the community which I'm always happy to help with. I've helped translate for local Chinese people in court dates, hospital appointments, social worker visits, and business meetings. My interest for cross cultural communication has developed over the years working with international people. I would love to work in the field of international higher education marketing and recruiting once I graduate with my Master's Degree in Public Relations by the end of 2012. |
