German to English: Dünnschicht-Zelltechnologie
Source text - German ... eine Idee besser
Dünnschicht-Zelltechnologie

Thin-film cell technology
Since the 1990’s thin-film techniques for the production of solar cells have been being developed at an increasing rate. Photoactive semiconductors are deposited in thin layers onto an inexpensive substrate (in most cases glass). Such techniques as vapor deposition, sputter (cathode atomization) and electroplating are used. The semiconductors used are amorphous silicon, copper indium selenide (CIS) and cadmium telluride. Theoretically, due to the strong light absorption of these materials, layers no thicker than 0.001 mm are needed for the conversion of sunlight. The materials are more tolerant towards contamination by foreign atoms. In comparison to the temperatures of up to 1,500°C required for the production of crystalline silicon cells, deposition temperatures of only 200 °C to 600 °C are needed for the production of thin-film solar cells. Reduced material and energy consumption and the possibility of largely automated manufacturing with a high level of efficiency offer significant potential for economization compared to crystalline silicon technology.
