Source text - Spanish Meses después de la conquista cristiana de la ciudad de Valencia en 1238, el monarca aragonés Jaime I fundaba una primitiva Capilla en el Palacio Real de origen musulmán . Ubicada por tanto extramuros, junto al río Turia y “ frente a una torre, en lo más ameno de la vega para gozar mejor de los ayres y vista del pueblo”, casi nada ha trascendido de este episodio . La adecuación material del lugar debió de correr pareja a la del conjunto arquitectónico en el que se emplazaba. Conocemos al menos su pronta dotación económica por parte de la corona –con una casa y tres jovadas de tierra– en la persona del primer capellán Juan Monzó . En aquella fecha ya se reservaba allí el Santísimo Sacramento, además de darse inicio a dos de las celebraciones religiosas más importantes del calendario litúrgico, como el Jueves y Viernes Santo. Empezaron a llegar asimismo preeminencias, exenciones y privilegios sucesivamente ampliados con el tiempo .
Pero el impulso decisivo para este recinto sagrado, puesto bajo la advocación de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, se produciría a mediados de la siguiente centuria.
Translation - English Months after the Christian conquest of the city of Valencia in 1238, James I of Aragon founded a simple chapel in the royal palace of the previous Muslim rulers. Located outside of the city walls, next to the River Turia and ‘frente a una torre, en lo más ameno de la vega para gozar mejor de los ayres y vista del pueblo’ (‘in front of a tower, in the most pleasant part of the meadow to enjoy the best air and views of the town’), almost nothing has transcended this episode. It must have been materially adapted to parallel the architectural ambience in which it was located. We at least know of the immediate economic endowment made by the Crown -with a house and three acres of land- in the person of the first chaplain Juan Monzó. At that time, the reservation of the Blessed Sacrament had begun, along with the observation of two of the most important religious celebrations of the liturgical calendar, Holy (or Maundy) Thursday and Good Friday. Similarly, pre-eminences, exemptions and privileges began to appear with time.
That said, the decisive impulse for this holy enclosure, dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels, would take place in the middle of the following century.

A mi embaxador en essa corte escrivo represente a Vuestra Santidad, en mi nombre, la necessidad que ay de unir seis capellanías y dos sacristanías del Palacio Real de Valencia y agregar dos beneficios de aquella santa yglesia y reducir lo uno y lo otro a quatro presviteratus para que, con la formación dellos y sirviéndose juntamente vuestra beatitud de reservar una pensión de quinientos ducados sobre aquel arçobispado para quando vaque, pueda estar el Santíssimo Sacramento en aquel Palacio con la decencia y veneración que se debe. Supplico a Vuestra Beatitud que, sirviéndose de dar a mi embaxador entera fee y crédito, me haga merçed de conçeder lo que en esta parte propusiese de la mía, que lo tendré a gran favor de Vuestra Beatitud
Translation - English Most Holy Father. I write to my ambassador in that court, to make representation to Your Holiness, in my name, of the necessity to unify the titles of six chaplaincies and two sacristans of the Royal Palace of Valencia, and to add two benefices from that holy church, and to reduce them to four presviteratus so that, with their formation and, if it serves Your Beatitude, the reservation of a pension of five hundred ducats from that archbishopric for when it falls vacant, the Blessed Sacrament can remain in that Palace with the propriety and veneration that it is due. I beseech Your Beatitude, if it serves, to give my ambassador complete faith and credit, and grant me the kindness of conceding this proposal on my behalf, which I will hold in great favour of Your Beatitude
