Rappresentare l'intera nazione oggi significa prima di tutto sapere e ribadire che le sorti dell'Italia sono intimamente correlate a quelle dell'Unione europea. Due destini che si uniscono.
Nel 2012 tutti noi abbiamo vinto il premio Nobel anche se forse non ce ne siamo pienamente accorti. L’Unione Europea è stata premiata per un’alchimia politica senza precedenti: la trasformazione delle macerie di un continente di guerra in uno spazio di pace. Allora i nemici decisero di vivere insieme. Dopo insieme abbiamo promosso la democrazia e riunificato il continente dalle ferite della cortina di ferro. Insieme abbiamo dato vita al mercato unico. Insieme abbiamo concepito la cooperazione allo sviluppo, di cui siamo leader al mondo. Insieme ai ragazzi partiti nel 1987 per il primo Erasmus, abbiamo scoperto di avere nuove case e nuove famiglie. E insieme, nella crisi, dobbiamo ripartire da alcune verità, perché della verità non bisogna mai avere paura.
Primo: il Nobel non è alla memoria. L’Europa non è il passato, è il viaggio nel quale ci siamo imbarcati per arrivare nel futuro. L’Europa è lo spazio politico con cui rilanciare la speranza che ha animato la nostra società nella ricostruzione del dopoguerra. È lo spazio politico con cui mettere fine a questa guerra di stereotipi, di sfiducia e di timidezza, mentre la tragedia della disoccupazione giovanile mette un’intera generazione in trincea. L’Europa esiste solo al presente e al futuro, solo se alla storia scritta dai nonni e dai padri si affiancano le azioni dei figli e dei nipoti.
Secondo: l’Europa è il nostro viaggio. La sua storia non è scritta malgrado noi. È scritta da noi. L’orizzonte è europeo, con le università che devono diplomare laureati in grado di lavorare ovunque in Europa, e le imprese che devono inventare prodotti che siano competitivi a livello continentale se non globale. Pensare l’Italia senza l’Europa è la vera limitazione della nostra sovranità, perché porta alla svalutazione più pericolosa, quella di noi stessi. Vivere in questo secolo vuol dire non separare le domande italiane e le risposte europee, nella lotta alla disoccupazione e alla disuguaglianza, nella difesa e nella promozione di tutti i diritti. E soprattutto, l’abbattimento dei muri tra il Nord e il Sud del continente, così come tra il Nord e il Sud dell’Italia.
Terzo: il porto a cui il nostro viaggio è rivolto sono gli Stati Uniti d’Europa e la nostra nave si chiama democrazia. Guardiamo con ammirazione lo sviluppo delle altre nazioni, in particolare in Asia e in Africa, ma non vogliamo sognare i sogni degli altri. Abbiamo il diritto a sogno che si chiama Unione Politica e abbiamo il dovere di renderlo più chiaro. Possiamo avere «più Europa» soltanto con «più democrazia»: con partiti europei, con l’elezione diretta del Presidente della Commissione, con un bilancio coraggioso e concreto come devono essere i sogni che vogliono diventare realtà.
Translation - English The New Europe
To represent the entire nation today means first of all to know and to emphasize that the fate of Italy is inextricably linked to that of the European Union. The two destinies are bound together.
In 2012 we all won the Nobel prize, even if we might not have been fully aware of it. The European Union was awarded the prize for a political alchemy without precedent: the transformation of the ruins of a continent of war into a place of peace. Enemies decided to live together. We then promoted, together, the democracy and reunification of the continent after the wounds of the iron curtain. Together we gave life to the Common Market. Together we devised cooperation for development, in which we are the leaders of the world. Together, through the young people who left in 1987 for the first Erasmus, we discovered that we had new homes, and new families. And together, in this crisis, we must start again from some fundamental truths, because we we never need to be afraid of truth.
Firstly:
The Nobel Prize isn’t about memory. Europe isn’t the past, it is the journey upon which we are embarking together in order to arrive in the future. Europe is the political space in which to relaunch the hope that animated our society in reconstruction after the War. It is the political space by means of which we can put an end to this present war of stereotypes, of mistrust and uncertainty, while the tragedy of youth unemployment puts an entire generation under siege. Europe only exists in the present and the future if, to the stories written by our grandfathers and fathers, we add the actions of their children and grandchildren.
Secondly:
Europe is our journey. Its history isn’t written despite us – it is written by us. The horizon is European, with the universities which must award diplomas and degrees that are recognized throughout Europe, and businesses that must invent products that are competitive at least at the continental level, of not the global one. To think of Italy without Europe is the true limitation of our ‘sovereignty’, because it leads to an undervaluation that is even more dangerous: the undervaluation of ourselves. To live in this century means not separating Italian questions from European anwers, in the fight against unemployment and inequality, in defence, and in the promotion of all rights. And above all, it means knocking down wall between the north and south of the continent, just like that between the north and south of Italy.
Thirdly:
The harbout to which our journey is directed is The United States of Europe, and our ship is called Democracy. We watch with admiration the development of other nations, in particular in Asia and Africa, but we don’t want to dream the dreams of other nations. We have the right to the dream that is called Political Union, and we have the duty to make it clearer. We can have ‘more Europe’ only with ‘more democracy’: with European political parties, with the direct election of the President of the Commission, with a courageous and concrete budget, we must make the dreams we desire turn into reality.

I was born in the USA, but from early childhood I have lived in various countries in Europe and the UK. I am an academic theologian, historian and EFL teacher with nearly 20 years' professional experience in writing, teaching, editing and translating. In addition to articles for Journals and academic volumes have written a murder mystery, and I have a great love of all types of literature. I also have expertise in history, philosophy and politics. I follow current affairs in Italy and the Vatican closely, and have political contacts in Italy and professional colleagues in Vatican City. I translate from Italian into English for the European Federalist Party, of which I am the Irish National Coordinator.
My specialism as a translator is sensitivity to the register appropriate to the project. For example, for journalism the English should be simple, clear and direct, whereas for speeches and lectures there should be an elegant rhetorical style. Novels should engage attention without requiring too much effort for the reader, and the register of reported speech (dialogue) should reflect the personality and style of the speaker. I have a long experience of a broad range writing, and I enjoy making each project exactly right – not only getting the meaning, but also the feeling.
