Source text - Spanish En la isla se cree que los ancianos se encarnan, al morir, en los nietos, razón por la que no pueden encontrarse los dos vivos al mismo tiempo. Como occurre a pesar de todo algunas veces, cuando un anciano se encuentra con su nieto, antes de poder hablar con él, debe darle una moneda. En esa teoría de las reencarnaciones se ha fundado la lingüística histórica. La lengua es como es porque acumula los residuos del pasado en cada generación y renueva el recuerdo de todas las lenguas muertas y de todas las lenguas perdidas, y el que recibe esa herencia ya no puede olvidar el sentido que esas palabras tuvieron en los días de los antepasados. La explicación es simple pero no resuelve los problemas que plantea la realidad.

La lingua è come è perché accumula i residui del passato in ogni generazione e rinnova il ricordo di tutte le lingue morte e di tutte le lingue perdute, e chi riceve quest’eredità ormai non può più dimenticare il senso che queste parole hanno avuto nei giorni dei suoi antenati. La spiegazione è semplice, ma non risolve i problemi che ci pone la realtà.
