Bio

I am a very keen linguist. My passion for languages pushed me to take learning English as a Foreign Language outside the classroom and completely immerse myself in the culture by applying to an undergraduate degree in the UK. Consequently, my degree in European Studies and Modern Languages has equipped me with a great command of French and Spanish and a European cultural, economic and political awareness. At the moment, I am a French and Spanish teacher at Burntwood Academy, a secondary school for girls in South West London. I have a real drive to develop not only my pupils’ language abilities to academic excellence but also to build them as global citizens. My aim is to make them acquire the necessary skills to succeed in society by offering them an enjoyable, inspiring and multicultural learning environment.

During my teaching career, I learnt how to work under a lot of pressure, meet deadlines as well as collaborate well with other team members. Not only have I developed my language skills to a great extent, but I have also improved my resilience and time management skills. I used my spare time providing my services as a freelance translator for different clients, including voluntarily subtitling for TEDx and Translation Nations. My freelancing activity also enabled me to experiment with and use effectively some of the translation tools on the market: SDL Trados Studio 2014 (Getting Started Certification) memoQ, Wordfast Anywhere, MemSource Cloud/Editor, Google Translation Toolkit.

My stay in France, as well as my MA in Translation have significantly enhanced my ability to use and manipulate a variety of key grammatical structures and patterns, while my teaching experience to date has helped me anticipate common misunderstandings English-native pupils might have. As a permanent language learner myself (currently studying Italian and Japanese at Intermediate level), I am mindful of the difficulties encountered when learning languages with different grammatical structures or cultural discrepancies. I have also researched different strategies for vocabulary learning that I recommend to pupils struggling with memorisation or any other special needs. My teaching degree has trained me to consider innovative and effective ways of using the language while my master’s in translation studies has enabled me to use different translation strategies and tools to develop these skills even further. My dissertation consisted in a lengthy translation of an English novel into Romanian and I was awarded a First for its quality and theoretical points I raised regarding my translation choices.
