My name is Giulia Bernardini, I was born in Urbino on 26/09/1989 and I recently received a title of Master of Science in Oriental Languages and Civilization at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Naples “L’Orientale”.
I graduated from high school at the Liceo Classico “Raffaello” of Urbino. The approach of teaching was highly interdisciplinary and aimed to develop a culturally motivated approach. In the course of higher education I acquired a good preparation in humanities and general culture. At the same time, I have always had interested in languages and cultures other than one’s own, trying to understand them in their complexity and showing an open-mind approach to confrontation. During the pre-university period, I studied English as a foreign language, often with native teachers and I speak fluently.
Together with the above training at school, I benefited from being raised in a family that gave me the desire to measure up to new horizons, without preconditions and with serenity.
Later, I enrolled in the undergraduate program in Oriental Languages and Civilization at the Faculty of Foreign Languages of the University of Urbino “Carlo Bo’”, choosing Chinese as main language, to get closer to a culture so distant as fascinating as that of China.
In the three years of the course, I studied Chinese historical, literary, philosophical and artistic matters, in parallel to the study of English language and literature. During these years, I also took some Chinese language certifications evidencing my knowledge of Chinese, with related documentation. After my bachelor’s degree, I followed an intensive summer course of two months at the University of Foreign Studies of Beijing (Beijing Foreign Studies University School), where I was able to further refine written and spoken Chinese language. I then decided to continue their education by choosing a path once again in the liberal arts, having chosen the University of Oriental Studies of Naples “L'Orientale” for the strong tradition that this institution has in the study of the cultural roots of the Eastern world and in particularly China.
The training that I chose was strongly identified in the linguistic, historical-cultural and literary sense, and was aimed at acquiring in-depth knowledge of humanities broad, and also to their practical use in the world of work and enterprise, at the Italian and international level. In fact, together with classical studies, I decided to investigate matters that deal with politics and institutions in China and also economy and development strategies. I also followed a course of Chinese business for two academic years of the Master. In February and March 2015, I went back to China, and I had some lectures in Chinese about Italian culture at a primary school in China.
I had the opportunity to demonstrate my language skills and abilities acquired over the years through my Master thesis, where I personally studied, transcribed and translated a Chinese funerary inscription dating from the seventh century AD, which I got to view live and study in China, once again in February-March 2015. For the realization of my thesis, I used primary sources in classical and modern Chinese language, specifically with regard to fields of study such as archeology and epigraphy, demonstrating once again my language skills acquired in these years of study. Together with this, I have always had a strong interest in all Chinese cultural products, such as pictorial arts and will continue to cultivate my interests regardless of the working life. Currently I am looking for a job and I desire to accumulate new experiences and try new areas, offering a very good knowledge of the language and culture of China.
By virtue of the apparent rise of the Chinese economy in fact, we are more and more frequently to relate with a country with a culture as fascinating as far that it is China, and this process also needs a preparation of several plans to understand it and deal with it.
Nowadays, I work as freelance translator and interpreter at different Fairs and Congresses in Italy, mainly dealing with chinese translator agencies, chinese travel agencies in China and chinese buyers and clients in Italy.
