Translation - English Introduction
The neurotrauma is referred to as a “silent epidemic” with an annual incidence in Europe of 229/100.000 and with a higher occurence in the male population (1.7/1.0). According to the data from WHO from 1998, the trauma ranked among the three leading causes of young population (between 5-44 years of age) mortality. The fact that 50% of trauma victims end up as invalids with debilitating neurological injuries accentuates the importance of an appropriate treatment of neurotrauma patients. The data from National Health Protection Institute of Macedonia reveal that the neurotrauma is most frequent cause of disability which makes it a major socio-economical and healthcare problem in our country. There are numerous studies which are investigating prospects of prevention and lowering the neurotrauma mortality. All of them are putting emphasize on the importance of an early and proper treatment during both the pre-hospitalization and hospitalization period. There is an evidence that treatment and therapy based on a scientific evidence coupled with management of patients which is inline with the latest guidelines is instrumental in preventing development of secondary brain damage and lowering the mortality in this kind of injuries.
In the pursuit of a suitable therapy which is simultaneously in accord with the guidelines for resuscitation of the neurotrauma victims, and taking into account the proven beneficial effects of Amantadine Sulfate (PK Merz), the Board of Experts and the Ethical Committee of CARIC (Clinic for Anesthesiology Reanimation and Intensive Care) in collaboration with the Clinic for Neurosurgery, have approved its use in this subset of patients.
