Do not attempt this yourself. Viewer discretion is advised.
"Travellers, there is no path.
"Paths are made by walking." - Antonio Machado
We're halfway to the South Pole. We're gonna be totally alone.
It's Tasmania. It's cold, it's rain, it's snow.
We're all going to leave changed forever.
10 Australians
Holy fuck. What is this place?
- What have I gotten myself into? - Yeah!
self-document their struggle
We have to document this whole experience,
while trying to survive at the same time.
Check it out.
against punishing wilderness
Like, 60k winds.
Mother Nature's kicking my arse.
Did you hear that?
in complete isolation
This experience is just as much a mind game
as it is a survival game.
We got dinner!
No crew
You fucker.
Yum.
Last person standing
I'm suddenly going downhill, very, very fast.
Oh, my heart.
wins
A $250,000 prize would change my life.
Sinking.
I'm not out here for coming first if it means I'm gonna kill myself.
I like you, Tasmania!
Alone Australia
Lutruwita/Tasmania West Coast
We're about to be dropped into the wilderness,
far from everyone we know and love,
to survive against all the odds.
We're strangers in a strange land.
Wow. What?
This is wild.
Do you know that feeling when fear and excitement
are so next to each other you don't know which is which?
This will be the hardest thing any of us have ever done.
That's muddy.
Come on.
We are completely and utterly alone out here.
What have I done?
The only food we can eat is stuff that we catch.
You ready?
No. I don't think anyone could be ready.
We have to live off the land.
Wow.
I am speechless. It's scary beautiful.
I want to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land,
the palawa people.
Palawa are contemporary Tasmanian Aboriginal people
who have lived on lutruwita for 60,000 years.
There's no crew. There's no producers.
There's zero contact with the outside world.
I can't believe that I'm getting to do this.
This is going to be so good,
and so bad, probably at the same time.
Now that I'm out here,
and I see how difficult the terrain is to walk through...
I was preparing for the worst case.
As Mike Tyson says,
"Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face."
The west coast of Tasmania is well known
for its harsh weather conditions.
Tasmania's proximity to Antarctica causes severe weather events.
And it is one of the toughest places in Australia to survive.
Holy shit.
High winds, sub-zero temperatures and flooding rains are common.
My new home. Oh, my God.
It's a fight between nature and yourself,
and that is a very hard thing to come out on top with.
That's cold!
It's hard country, it's gonna be very hard country,
but this is gonna be home for the next couple of months.
With my skill set, I do have what it takes to win this.
The adventure begins.
We're only allowed to bring 10 items with us on this journey,
and I tried to choose my 10 items
based on things that I would normally take bush anyway.
Here we are.
Things like my axe, my saw, my knife, sleeping bag.
Going, going...
Gone.
Here we go.
I'm prepared to stay out there for 90 days.
All my stuff on my back.
See you guys! But what if that's not enough?
I'm not gonna tap out at 90 days 'cause it's 91.
There is no time limit. Whoever lasts the longest wins $250K.
Dear Lord Jesus,
thank you for your beautiful country down here that you've created.
We can tap out any time,
Translation - Arabic

Hi. I'm Kumi Taguchi.
"Tonight on Insight -
it's one year on from the fall of Kabul."
"What is life like now, for those rebuilding here
and those left behind?"
Afghanistan is being taken to Stone Age.
And I see not only Afghan leaders
"but the international community
equally responsible for this reversal."
"How does it weigh on you, knowing that
many of your former Afghan colleagues"
cannot leave that country?
It's pretty stressful, especially when I get...
Excuse me.
"Those who went on the ground
in Afghanistan had the most to lose,"
but had the least to say about that.
"I think we have the watches.
They have the time."
The Taliban are in power
"and the international community
is forced to work with them."
If the Taliban see me, they will kill me.
I've called the armed forces to alert.
Every nation now has a decision to make.
"Either you are with us,
or you are with the terrorists."
The government has decided
"to make available to the coalition
by deploying overseas"
the following military forces...
"October 2001
Australia joins the United States-led coalition
in Afghanistan, in response to
the September 11 terrorist attacks."
"December 2002
Australia's initial commitment to the conflict
ends and 200 troops are withdrawn."
Thank you for what you have done.
"December 2002
Australia's initial commitment to the conflict
ends and 200 troops are withdrawn."
"But it seems those in Afghanistan
may have left too soon."
"July 2005
Australia redeploys troops
to combat Taliban resurgence."
"April 2009
Australia's military presence
peaks in Afghanistan,
with just over 1,500 troops on the ground."
Attacks against Afghan civilians
"have occurred
with more frequency and intensity."
"The Gillard Government says
the fight must go on."
"The Australian Defence Force
had a very bad day in Afghanistan yesterday."
"26 Australians
have now been killed in Afghanistan."
How many more will die?
"It's the beginning of the end
of Australia's war in Afghanistan."
"December 2013
Most Australian troops
leave Uruzgan Province.
Around 400 Military personnel remain to train
and support the Afghan National Army."
My conclusion is, yes, it has been worth it.
"In line with the United States
and our other allies and partners,"
the last remaining Australian troops
will depart Afghanistan in September 2021.
"Some fear the withdrawal could put
the country back to where it was in 2001."
Social media is full of images
"purporting to show
Afghan government soldiers"
surrendering to the Taliban.
"August 2021
The Taliban seize Kabul
and take control of Afghanistan."
The race is now on to get out of Kabul.
Overnight, the airport tarmac overrun,
a rush to the fast-closing exit.
Thank you so much for being here.
"Khalid, in August last year,
you and your family fled Afghanistan"
"on one of those evacuation flights
we just saw."
"How did you feel,
leaving the country you grew up in?"
"I felt like my dreams
were shattered."
"I felt like we had been betrayed
by the international community."
I felt betrayed by US.
"I felt betrayed by my president,
and the world that was watching in silence"
a terrorist group taking over a country.
"I never thought I will have to leave
my country like this,"
"with nothing but only the clothes
that we were wearing"
and only a single handbag that I was holding.
"You and your family were at Kabul Airport,
among the thousands trying to escape."
What was that like, there?
"I was passing through a mixture of emotions,
to be honest."
"It felt like entire Afghanistan
has rushed into the airport."
"We could see people
climbing over each other"
just to get to the gates of the aeroplanes.
"We saw coalition forces
standing there to help people,"
for which we are grateful enough,
"but overall, it was a chaotic scene
that we will never, ever forget."
This trauma will live on in our hearts forever.
"You had been living and working in Kabul
as a journalist."
"What did it mean for you
when the Taliban took power?"
"That was the end, not only for me,
but for every bright young Afghan,"
"whether male or female,
whether they were journalists,"
"artists, writers, from the sports fraternity,
actors, singers, doctors,"
"or people who served
with the coalition forces,"
"be it interpreters, the drivers,
or in any form they served."
So it was the end for them.
"Did you ever feel like
your life was at risk during that time?"
It was, definitely,
"because being a strong critic
of the Taliban on social media"
and serving the state broadcaster,
"where we always portrayed Taliban
as terrorists,"
it was indeed in danger.
"You have four sisters. What did
the Taliban takeover mean for them?"
Not only for my sisters, Kumi.
"Currently we see for every
Afghan daughter, sister and girl,"
"the takeover of Taliban
means the end of their life."
"Women are currently
confined to their homes in Kabul."
"The Taliban have no issue with women
polishing shoes on the streets of Kabul,"
"but they have issues with women teaching
at colleges and universities in Kabul."
It has been more than 350 days
"that girls in Afghanistan
are not able to go to schools."
"Who is going to compensate them
for this loss?"
"We see that Afghanistan
is being taken to Stone Age."
And I see not only Afghan leaders,
"but the international community
equally responsible for this reversal."

I'm Karla Grant."
"The West Australian Government

"the best heritage protection
legislation in the country"
"after the passage of
the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act."
"But some elders, traditional owners
and custodians say"
the law doesn't go far enough
"to protect their sacred places
from desecration,"
"leading to what they claim
is cultural genocide."
We're telling our story.
"40 years down the track
we're still fighting for the Ngurra"
"and for recognition and
acknowledgement about this place."
"Murujuga traditional custodians
in the WA Pilbara region"
"know how hard it is
to protect heritage."
"Even a simple meeting
with 'Living Black', on a public road,"
"with Woodside's gas plant
in the background,"
"prompts the arrival of not one
but three police cars."
Who's in charge out of you guys?
"Well, we all are.
We belong to this place."
"At the end of the day
we have a human right to sit here"
"and say what we need to say
about our culture."
"This is a peaceful event,
we're coming here to be interviewed"
"by these individuals,
no protests today."
"No, no, no,
we're not saying there is."
"They say this passive-aggressive
surveillance is typical."
We have legal rights to be here.
"Are you guys doing an interview
up here, are you?"
"Yeah, we're doing an interview.
Can I ask who's told youse about us?"
"- Was it the security?
- We just got a job, so I'm assuming so."
"After that unexpected intervention,
we were welcomed to country."
OK, what I have just said is...
"I called out to the Ngurra,
to tame it,"
we have brought strangers here.
I'm welcoming the strangers,
and not for the country to hurt youse.
"That's what I have just said
in Ngarluma language."
And that's in English.
"Occupational health

"So, Karla, we're at the start

Over to the right side of us
"is obviously the Karratha Gas Plant,

"All that destruction over there
that they're doing."
"Cheek by jowl with Woodside's
soon-to-be-expanded gas project"
and other chemical factories
"are about a million petroglyphs,
ancient carvings in stone."
"Woodside destroyed
about 3,000 petroglyphs"
"when it first built
its LNG plant decades ago,"
"and its visitors centre

It's not just an historic concern,
Indian multinational Perdaman

"A decision halted temporarily

Diddy, am I right?
"The songlines
right through to Uluru,"
"right through the eastern states,
you fellas' side over there,"
they all, like we say,
"the songlines carry
right through the Ngurra."
"'Cause it was one harmonious

before the colonials come in.
"But physical displacement is not
the major problem these days."
"Very few places on this part
of Murujuga, scientists say,"
"are spared the impact of
corrosive chemical emissions."
"I'll quick yell out to the Ngurra,
let everybody know we're here."
Ngurra! Ngurra!
"Wake them all up
and welcome everybody."
"It stands to the end of time
basically,"
"and so it's concerning
that we have industry"
"or emissions or whatever,
that's polluting the air,"
"that's going to be destroying
in some way our rock art."
This place here is like our church.
"Our history and our stories
are connected to us"
and connected through our bloodlines,
"and we hold it with everything
within us and it is our everything."
"We belong to the Ngurra,
they protect us and show us a lot."
They're very spiritual, very sacred,
"and we, as custodians,
have responsibility and obligations"
to protect our history.
This extraordinary collection,
"which has humankind's
earliest depiction of the human face,"
"is so important it earnt
a World Heritage nomination."
"The rock art gallery there
is incredibly important."
It's actually unique in the world.
"Nowhere else do we have 60,000 years
or more of the spiritual beliefs"
"and the culture of humankind
still there for us to see today."

"They say their work shows
beyond doubt that rock art"
"is being damaged by emissions
and chemical contamination"
from industrial development.

AFGHANISTAN
"When I'm playing volleyball,
I forget about everything."
I love that feeling.
"I forget about problems.
I forget about everything..."
"Everything that makes
my mind crazy."
Since the Taliban came
"we have been banned
from sports completely."
"A lot has changed for women
in Afghanistan in the last year."
"Taliban forces entered the heart
of the Afghan capital, Kabul, today."
The culmination of a rapid advance.
"In August 2021,
news outlets across the world"
"broadcast the Taliban's
return to power."
In their first media conference,
"the Taliban sought to reassure
Afghans that they'd changed."
"Women will be afforded
all their rights,"
"whether it is in work
or other activities."
But they haven't kept their word.
"The gymnasium where
we played volleyball was closed."
"It was then that I knew
the Taliban would never agree"
"to accept the activities
women do in Afghanistan."
"Tonight, we meet
the young Afghan athletes"
"playing a dangerous game
with the Taliban."
"We should not lose hope
whatever happens."
Nobody can last without hope.
Afghan Athletes On The Run
"Vanessa Schlesier, Elise Potaka,
Sissy Reyes"
Kabul
"When I play volleyball, I forget
about all of the external problems."
I focus solely on the game.
"This feeling
comes from deep within me."
"It's a very valuable feeling.
I don't ever want to lose it."
This is Bahara.
"She is 20 years old,
and for the past few years,"
"she's been training
to be an elite athlete."
That's it.
"Bahara was a member of Afghanistan's
National Volleyball Team."
"She and her teammates
were professionals."
"They'd competed at
high levels of competition"
all around the world.
But then the Taliban came.
Just a month after taking power,
"the Taliban banned women
from playing sport."
"They said that in sport,
women's bodies and faces are exposed,"
going against Islamic values.
"When I see these photos, it reminds me
of all the memories we had together,"
"the days we spent together,
the games we played together."
"It really makes me happy
and also sad."
"The gymnasium where
we played volleyball was closed."
"We were told that women do not have
the right to go there and exercise."
"I have to exercise at home
so that I can stay in shape."
It is quite different.
"Before the Taliban,
I was free as a bird."
"Now the bird is stuck in this cage
and cannot go out."
"AFGHANISTAN NATIONAL
OLYMPIC COMMITTEE"
"Bahara used to play
in the city's largest stadiums."
"General Directorate of
Physical Education & Sport"
"Once filled with sports fans,
they're now empty,"
and guarded by the Taliban.
It's very sad. Very sad.
"In the past, we had
30 or 40 women players here."
"We've been given
rare access to this stadium"
"and a chance to speak with those
who used to work and train here."
"Is the electricity fixed?
Not yet?"
"The director said it would be fixed
by now. Why not?"
"Right now, the future of
women's sport is a dangerous topic."
"We've chosen to protect their
identities so they can speak freely."
SPORT FOR ALL
"For competitions, we had more
than a thousand people here."
Life was all normal then.
"Suddenly everything
was turned upside down."
"When we see this stadium empty,
that's very sad."
It really doesn't feel good.
"And, yes, this man here,
he's watching us, what we're saying."
Now everything is finished. Finished.
"But across Afghanistan, young
active women are trying to find ways"
to get through each day indoors.
Azheena is 23 years old.
"She used to cycle to university
and with friends."
"She had dreams of one day cycling
across Afghanistan."
Now she rides in her basement.
Every day in the morning,
"at around 10 or 11,
I exercise for 15 minutes, for sure."
"It gives you a different feeling,
despite the location."
It feels like you are in a cage,
but all of a sudden, a light comes.
"And for several minutes
you can enjoy that moment and laugh."
Those several minutes are valuable
"in the current situation
in Afghanistan."
"Azheena and Bahara
were both part of a cycling club"
"that rode not just in Kabul
but out into the provinces."
"They were breaking down
barriers for women,"
one ride at a time.
"When the girls go hiking and cycling
or play sport outside in society,"
when another girl sees you...
they...
"tell themselves
that if she can do it,"
I can do it too.

"I had to relocate to just outside

"It was a program that had been set up

"In my opinion,
it was unprofessional, unethical."
"I myself didn't get
any learning out of it."
"But it was 12 weeks,
I've signed a contract,"
"so I thought,
""Just get through this."""
"I think that just kind of set
the tone for my time in mining."
"When I finally got out on site,
you look around the room,"
"and there's like, OK,
there's only, at the time,"
"there was six females on crew,
on this big crew,"
"and I was the only Indigenous

"Very male-dominated workforce.
Very low-Indigenous workforce."
"Yeah, there's completely
no support."
"It's daunting,
just going in there."
"I guess you have to prove
yourself a lot more."
"If you're a female in mining,
at the time,"
"there's an expectation
that you just stick to trucking."
"That's it. All the other machinery,
that's for the blokes. Yeah."
"When I started to get other tickets,
for graders, or water carts,"

"it kick-started
getting some of the commentary -"
"""Oh, it must be because you're
sleeping with the supervisor"""
"or people making comments

"just because I was
female and Indigenous."
There's a perception that,

but it's not true.
"If I was to raise an issue then,

"""so and so said this to me

"If anything, it would have
put a target on my back."
"I just thought,

"""just get through your 18 months,
and then take off."""
"Six weeks was the longest
I've ever taken off."
"I've always just gone from job to job.
I've never not worked."
"After being in that kind of headspace
for a bit,"
"I had to sit and kind of think about
what was next for me,"
"and then a contracting company
reached out to me,"
"and said they had a fly in, fly out
job out of Cairns."
"They gave me an option of two sites,
and I had relatives at both of them,"
"so I thought, alright, deadly, you'll have that
support network when you get there as well."
"Why not?
Why not give it a try?"
"I noticed, straight from the get-go,
there was a lot more women,"
"and there was a lot more
Indigenous mob,"
"and so then, immediately, I just felt that
sense of, alright, this is going to be OK."
Yeah, yeah, yeah!
And the work group was so deadly.
So funny, yeah, yeah!
"So it was kind of like a fit
straightaway, really."
"Everything's been running
pretty good."
"A few comms issues when they're
moving towers. That's about it."

will be launched near Nhulunbuy

"It will be a really exciting

"to be capable of launching

"bringing terrific and substantial
economic benefits"
to both Australia and the region.
Three, two, one, fire.
We're away.
"People in Nhulunbuy
and surrounding areas"
"will get a glimpse of the 13m rocket,
but you'd better be quick."
"The launches themselves
will be visible from Nhulunbuy"
"for about 10 seconds
as they jet off into space."
How cool is that?
"It's going to be an exciting Sunday
night for the mob up there."
"Aboriginal Australia has had a long
association with space exploration."
Did you know that NASA,
"it launched two space probes
in the 1970s called Voyager 1 and 2?"
"And on the front of those space
probes was a gold record"
"that featured a Yolngu ceremonial
song called The Morning Star."
And it was used as an invitation
"for anyone to come back
to planet Earth."
Oh, wow. That's awesome.
"So to tell us more
about space exploration"
up there in Yolngu country,
"we're joined by Denise Bowden
from the Yothu Yindi Foundation."
Denise, thanks for joining us tonight.
"Would it be fair to say
there's a lot of excitement"
